If you read about war, you will read Fuller

Fuller is one of those clear thinkers about war. His was the original assessment of the values of tanks, so his background was both broad (history) and focused (tank warfare in the World Wars as an officer).There's no such thing as too much of Fuller.

Interesting for historians of strategy, limited contemporary relevance for strategists

J.F.C. Fuller' Foundations of the Science of War is more interesting for what is says about Fuller than for its utility for modern strategists and military thinkers.

In this volume, Fuller lays out his principles of war and the thinking behind them. His principles of war, with only minor refinements, are still in use by the U.S. military today, and drew on principles sketched out by von Clauswitz and earlier thinker. He is meticulous in building and supporting the arguments for his principles, to the point of pedantry. The language is antiquated, the arguments verbose and circuitous, and overall it is neither clear nor succinct, but it does address many useful concepts for thinking about conflict. There are, however, far better books written before and since. The value of this book is the insight into how an influential military thinker of the 20th century framed his thoughts.

Therein lies the rub. Fuller was an enthusiast of mysticism and the occult. For a modern, pragmatic military thinker, Kabbalistic drawers, and spiritualistic references seem a bit out of place and rather off-putting. He explains in great detail his principles of war, but in a fashion that mirrors Kabbalah mysticism. The value of Fuller's writing is obscured by the connections to esoteric belief structures.

For a historian of strategic thought, this book is useful. For a biographer of Fuller, this book is essential. For a modern military theorist or practitioner, the one doesn't need to be at the top of your reading list.

The Best in Military Principles!!!

The best book I have found about military principles. Hard to read sometimes. Because he tried to adopt a very strict scientific philosophic approach, based on Spengler's method. This way was partially got.
Almost 65 years after its first edition, it was reprinted by the Marines Corps. I got a first edition copy from an American university library (Lancaster, Pa.).
It had many critiques and later the author went back on the underlying ideas in the book. The critiques, in turn, had as bottom that he had an eccentric personality, in a group (the military men) tremendously conservative and established by protocol. He had mystical streakes (Hindu philosophy, yoga) and flirted with the Nazi, being got by Hitler (he was a general). This in a Great Britain menaced by the totalitarisms was deadly and out of place.
