Editorial Reviews

Review

"There are certain threads that run through the work of John O'Donohue. They manifest themselves with different colours and textures. The form may change for different purposes of rhythm and resonance, but the intention remains constant. It is grounded in human vulnerability and the desire, the longing, for a connection to the wonder of the divine in nature, and human life within it." -- Michael D Higgins, politician and broadcaster

About the Author

JOHN O'DONOHUE was born in County Clare in 1956 and lived in a remote cottage in the west of Ireland until his untimely death in January 2008. A highly respected poet and philosopher, he was awarded a Ph.D. in philosophical theology from the University of Tubingen in 1990. John wrote a number of international bestselling books: Anam Cara, Eternal Echoes, Divine Beauty and Benedictus, which he completed shortly before he died. He also wrote two volumes of poetry, Conamara Blues and Echoes of Memory. The Four Elements was originally published in separate editions in 1994/5.

The four works constituting this slim book were among O'Donohue's first writings and were published separately in pamphlet form. John's brother has brought them together after John's death and provides a 20+ page introduction about his brother's life. John was much more into mainline Christianity when he wrote these, and his writing style had not yet progressed to the incredible beauty of his later works.

O'Donohue is one of the great poetic sages of modern times. His work and writing has deepened and changed countless lives. Every reader and student of his owes him a debt of profound gratitude. He describes beauty as if he were inside it instead of observing it. His writing is the kind where you can open to any page and immediately find a sentence worth remembering.

It is good, but does not compare with his later writings. John was just entering his superb insight with this book. The book would be excellent as a first O'Donohue reading.

I love this book because it addresses in a poetic and particular and universal manner, with grace and deep multidimensional meaning, our abiding embrace by the four elements in our individual lives and in our particular places on this earth. It reveals how this artist has come awake to this embrace and the multiple ways, known and unknown and unknowable, he express his being as Nature and in and with Nature.

Absolutely stunning in its execution, O'Donohue weaves a brand new worldview right before our eyes in The Four Elements. Using unassuming language, poignant descriptions, and gentle Irish humor, this book has the capacity to redirect readers' paths and help them focus on the cosmic, invisible world around us.

This gift of John O'Donohue's work was well loved immediately by a poetess I know, to whom I sent it because she is homebound due to illness. She finds his works inspiring and well worth reading more than once.
