Editorial Reviews

A brilliant moment in sports history

The name of Roger Bannister is one of the most famous in the history of sports. In 1954, he became the first to accomplish what had been considered impossible: running the distance of a mile in less than four minutes.

The Four Minute Mile is the compelling story of Roger Bannister and his rivals, the runners who shared his dream and pursued it with unrelenting tenacity. It was a quest for athletic immortality that spanned eight years, three continents and captivated a post-war world avidly seeking new heroes.

This is a 1988 made-for-TV (Australian Broadcasting Corporation/BBC co-production) miniseries that aired in two segments. It's quite good and is very true to the events as described in Neal Bascomb's extensively referenced history of the events leading up to the Empire Games, "The Perfect Mile." While it focuses on Roger Bannister and his teammates at Oxford, the movie also tells the story of Australia's John Landy, Finland's Denis Johansson, and America's Wes Santee and their quests to be the first to run a four-minute mile.

The acting is quite good, the costumes and sets very believable and the story is appropriately paced, though three hours long.

I especially enjoyed it because I'm a runner, but there's a lot here that the general sports fan would enjoy.

This movie does a great job of highlighting the people in the race for breaking the four minute mile barrier. If you are a runner, you will be motivated. My cousin and I watched this movie the night before racing a marathon where we attempted and succeeded in qualifying for the Boston Marathon.

Runner's World Magazine published an article on the best running movies and this one made the list. RW stated that this movie is far better than ESPN's "Four Minutes" movie... and I agree with them. There needs to be a DVD of this movie available!

This may not be as good as the ESPN movie Four Minutes that came out later, but it's not bad either. I think you'll enjoy it.
