The story Four O'Clock: Book Two in the Time Series by Josephine Traynor is a romantic comedy. What happens when two people play matchmaker and then start to fall in love themselves? You have a wonderful love story. This is the story of Charlotte and Chris. This book is the perfect addition to the Time Series. It had me hooked from the first chapter and I didn’t want to put it down until the final page. I would highly suggest reading these books in order as the storylines interconnect. This is the third book I have read by the author and I know that I can count on her to write a story that not only pulls me in but ensures that warm feeling you get when you read of two people falling in love.
Charlotte is a smart woman and a wonderful designer of clothes. She takes care of her family’s business and designs on the side. She doesn’t feel like her family supports her choice in designing. She doesn’t date. She has been there and done that. It ended badly and she will not take that chance again. Then she meets Chris. He is just there to help his brother find new clothes for an upcoming date, however, he stirs up feelings in Charlotte that she can’t ignore. From that day forward Charlotte’s outlook on life and love changes and she finds herself with someone that believes in what she does and for who she is, not who her family is. Will Charlotte take a chance and start a relationship or will the past ruin any chance of her finding happiness?
Chris is a man that doesn’t do relationships or dating. He makes sure that whoever he is out with knows that it is only for the night, not forever. He has dreams for the future, however, doesn’t feel supported by his brother. Now he is broke and working in his brother’s kitchen. Then he meets Charlotte. He begins to see that things could be different with her. She believes in him and wants to make his dreams come true. Chris has a lot of unresolved issues with his brother. He feels that his brother always puts him down and never supports anything that he does. This leads to arguments and them not speaking with each other. Will Charlotte make Chris believe in his talent and work towards making his dreams come true? Will she turn this man who only does one night stands into someone who wants to stay? I highly recommend reading this book to find out if Charlotte and Chris find their HEA! This book does contain adult situations and would be recommended for those 18 years of age or older.
I'm going to say that this book can be read as a standalone, but it's helpful to read A Quarter to Twelve in order to fully appreciate the background story. This is my favorite in the time series, so far. I LOVED Charlotte & Chris.
What I have loved most about this series is how it gives you the love story you're wanting in a book, but also delivers a bit of real life. Each of these characters have been living life being circled with outside perceptions of who they are or who they should be. There is so much more to both of them that people seem to miss out on. This strains relationships all around them, as both Charlotte and Chris are working to be more. I was super frustrated with some others in the book who just couldn't seem to accept them for who they were working to be!
A lot happens in this book, as well as getting to catch up a bit with Ava and Patrick! I highly recommend it to any romance & romantic comedy lovers!
The two main characters that we follow are Charlotte and Chris. Charlotte is Ava’s best friend, and that is explained further in the first book. Chris is the brother of Patrick, also in the first book, and is Ava’s boyfriend, partner, etc. Ava and Patrick’s first date is what brings both Charlotte and Christ together ultimately. Their date was a wreck and Patrick needed clothes to change into so Chris and he happened upon the store that Charlotte’s parent’s own and she works in.
Charlotte’s parents own a lot of the businesses in the town. She is pretty much expected to take over the family businesses when she is done with college. They are not truly aware just how much she wants to be a fashion designer. “I really, really, really love my job… I do. It gives me the freedom to study fashion and my parent’s own a clothes store so I get to play real life dress-up every single day. The downside is it’s the only decent men’s clothing store in this town and every guy that walks in here thinks he can hit on me…I am the walking talking stereotype. Blonde, ample cleavage, and that automatically makes me an idiot. Well this idiot is studying a double degree of fashion and business. I speak four languages and will end up taking over the family businesses-not bad for a bimbo.” She has her guard up because of the way that the community and the men in it see her and because of the way they treat her.
Chris is currently living on his brother’s couch and playing it safe saving pennies, until he can get ahold of enough cash to secure the first semester of college for himself. He also has a passion for design, just a more industrial way. He wants to be an architect. It is the love of design in general that draw the two together. “I want to study architecture. Design, structure, it’s like I see things in a different way to others. It’s become an unconscious thing of when I walk into a room or building, I can’t help but not see the beauty but more often than not, I see flaws and how I would go about fixing them.” Charlotte sees herself in him and feels the connection right away. “It’s like he’s in my head. That’s exactly what I think about design.” Ultimately, Charlotte is the last bit of encouragement that Chris needs to persevere on and get the money for, as well as apply for college. “My one bit of advice for anything in life here, go for it. You will regret it forever if you don’t. Life’s too short for regrets.”
The two have some obstacles to overcome before they will be able to get serious about a relationship with each other though. For one, Charlotte’s family and their financial and social status carry a certain set of expectations for Charlotte. “This is why I don’t go to the fancy places for dinner. They have spies everywhere. Everything I do is reported back to them.” Chris has his own issues with love and commitment. He knows he is falling for her and fast but he doesn’t know how to tell her. “Girlfriend. That word used to freak me out. Have me running for the hills. Now it does the reverse. I’ve never been prouder to say I’m in a relationship and feel the need to announce that to everyone I meet. The more time I spend with her, the more in love with her I become. I’ve only been able to admit that to myself, and as much as I want to say it to her, my own stupid fear is holding me back.”
Will they each be able to overcome the obstacles that lay between them on the path to love? Or will the pressures of each obstacle be too much for what the young love is?
