I am so glad I read this, it is exactly what I needed at this point in my life. Thank you!!!
Will take on some of his wise words
The 4 Pillar Plan was a good place to start, it was not too daunting and I have been able to implement some of the suggestions
Dr Rangan Chatterjee comes across on the page as he does in the excellent Doctor in the House series broadcast on the BBC, warm, practical, down-to-earth, and brutally honest at times...and he has begun a process which I hope will bring into the mainstream an approach to health which is desperately needed. Health services the world over are creaking under the strain of treating illness... what if a major solution is in our own hands, and we don't always need to rely on the doctors to fix us?
In many western countries in particular, our lifestyles are reducing the quality of our lives... The 4 Pillar Plan offers a series of interventions which can help us to improve the quality of our lives. It is written in an accessible way, and the suggested interventions do not rely on spending loads of money on equipment, nor on increasing medicalisation. They also do not have to be implemented all at once in a big bang approach.
If you are struggling to know where to start with making yourself feel better, I recommend this book as a great starting point to focus on your wellness - achieving or improving a higher quality of life.
UPDATE - 6 weeks since purchasing
I've been working on the four pillars since I put up my original review, and it is having a positive impact on my overall wellbeing.
My success has been rather lopsided, as I've not made any progress on any of the five MOVE pillar interventions! I've been onto Dr Rangan's website and watched the videos for activating your glutes, but that doesn't really count as I've not attempted the exercises myself. A brief attempt has told me that while the exercises look simple they are not at all simple to execute.
On the EAT pillar, I've managed to make progress on all five interventions. Eating in a 12 hour window is a very achievable discipline for most people, I suspect. There is also 5 a day (vegetables, and preferably different colours), drinking 8 small glasses of water equating to 1.2 litres. Denormalising sugar (I should say I've also been using Glenn Harrold's Lose Weight Now Lite by Glenn Harrold app to help with this one). Also reducing/removing processed foods from my diet - more from scratch cooking, which does require some planning, but then having leftovers available cuts down on the daily grind
On the RELAX pillar, I've managed to make progress two out of five (15 minutes of me time every day; practise stillness at least 5 mins daily -
where I'm learning to use mindfulness/meditation).
On the SLEEP pillar, so far managing to consume my caffeine before noon (with occasional lapses), and embrace morning light. My sleep is massively improved as a result of what I've done on RELAX and EAT, so I'm just thinking how much better that improvement will be when I progress on MOVE.
I've lost a small amount of weight (4lbs), but the reduction in stress, improved sleep, and better dietary choices I'm making are exciting changes for me. I will hope to update again in a further 6 weeks or so. Ultimately I am hoping to make the changes I put in place a permanent lifestyle change.
We can't change all the things together but we can change our habit by doing little tiny changes.
