Purchase options and add-ons
Unlike most other vegetable gardening books on the market, this one approaches the subject through the lens of what you can grow during each of the four seasons, even if you live in a cold climate. Using season-extension techniques, such as cold frames, mini hoop houses, and thick mulches, combined with a thoughtful mixture of annual and perennial crops, you’ll discover that eating from your backyard through all 12 months is possible.
With a hearty dose of enthusiasm and expertise, author Misilla dela Llana of YouTube’s Learn to Grow channel presents this season-by-season guide to growing edible plants, covering everything from what tasks and what crops are best for each harvesting season to step-by-step DIY projects for structures and methods to temper weather extremes. With Four-Season Food Gardening you can keep on growing, no matter what challenges Mother Nature presents.
Inside, you’ll find info on:
- Veggies you can harvest in the dead of winter
- Foods that come from perennial plants you harvest from for many years
- How to build and use cold frames and other season extenders to prolong your harvest
- Tips for incorporating layers of edible plants to maximize space

SPRINGEvergreen perennial herbs such as rosemary, bay leaf, sage, oregano, thyme, winter savory, and mint are also available to harvest. Some deciduous varieties of perennial herbs require time to regenerate as they lose their foliage in the cold months. |
SUMMERA technique I learned when I used to pick blueberries at a local farm is to cup your hand right beneath a clump of berries. Gently roll your thumb over the clump and ripe berries easily fall off. |
FALLPlant fall crops started in summer at least 6–10 weeks before your area’s average first fall frost date. This will give them enough time to adjust and mature before you harvest or try to overwinter them. Your transplants can also be planted under a low tunnel, in a greenhouse or a cold frame. |
WINTERThough you won’t likely be planting new vegetables in your outdoor garden if you live in a cold climate, it’s a great time to get growing using a technique called “winter sowing.” Late-winter seedings of cold-tolerant crops under row covers, inside cold frames, and in unheated greenhouses will also jump-start the season. |

The author clearly knows how to work with nature and her cycles. Different sections for the four seasons make it very clear what to do when.
There are recipes for natural sprays to repel pests, wonderful for people with companion animals who want to avoid chemicals.
The information on soil helps build a very strong foundation for your garden.
I could go on and on. Received this book on the first day of Spring and dove in. Less than an hour later I'd learned a lot, and I've been gardening for years.
This book is excellent for the beginner, explanations are careful, clear and thorough. But there's plenty here for the seasoned gardener as well.
So pleased with my purchase.
Will use this book and grow fruits, vegetables and herbs for years to come.
Thank you, Misilla Dela Llana! Great job!
"Four Season Food Gardening" gives great details about the types of plants you can grow throughout the planting seasons. There are details about soil, compost, weeds, beneficial insects and harmful insects, harvesting, garden tools, gardening indoors and outdoors, and so forth. Therefore, this book is quite comprehensive if you want to learn about starting a garden, adding more components/plants to your garden, or just get a broad range of useful information.
There are nice, large photos to help you as well as special hints and notations to help you grow the best garden possible. There is an Index at the back of the book for easy reference, and a table of contents in the front.
