These prompts are quite similar to those used on Washington State tests for junior and senior high school student achievement measurements. They were much like those prompts used in the Washington Assessment of Student Learning. Additionally, these prompts could easily be used by writing teachers at that level and in college as well.
However, I'm about a third through writing my third book and hitting a snag with no relief. Unfortunately, these prompts did nothing to kick start the process for me. Writers block can result from a number of reasons and most of them are extremely complex. I know in my case the block is probably a natural break after writing about a shocking, horrendously painful event. Nonetheless, I don't think this is a cure for writer's block, but it can be helpful for classroom teachers, especially due to the organization and plethora of prompts.
Bryan Cohen is creative and his arrangement of writing prompts is done in clever fashion. His prompts themselves are good and thought provoking. As a book (or series of books, it would seem), the idea seems more than a little underwhelming.
I can’t complain about the price, though. It does seem like the author is trying to crank out quantity over quality. If you want a great book about the craft of writing, or even inspiration to write, I would look elsewhere. This is merely a clever gimmick.
