This book was just a taste of the good things to come. I am eagerly awaiting the next, full-length Reno Hart.
This story, The Flying Snapper, is our intro to Reno, a bright, smart woman, but one who’s trying to get her bearings in a new career after recently losing her husband.
All four stories are terse and fast-paced. Reno is on a roll. The right gal for the right crime. Like her namesake city she’s quick and sharp, and if you commit a crime better hope she’s not on the case ’cause she’ll fry your you-know-what. Looking forward to hooking up with her again! Terrific, fun stories that’ll keep you hooked!
Sometimes a book or phrase is too on the nose, to obvious or cliched. Not so with Seasons of Reno Hart which introduces a fun filled yet complex character and her sometimes helpful sidekick.
New author, Campbell, weaves subtly with brash obviousness in a manner typically expected of a much more seasoned writer. For example, while neither of the protagonists play the part (sorry, I took out the next phrase because upon re-reading I realized it spoiled a fun twist), they do so as a casual matter of fact. It is this type of relaxed richness that quietly and fully adds texture to what is essentially a beach read type thriller, or perhaps better described as a modern day pulp, noir thriller. It is fully worthy of the roots in the early genre while adding the sophistication of what today's readers enjoy.
Now that I have read the four shorts and have a through introduction to this new series, I am eagerly awaiting the first full length novel. Due to very clean writing and style I fully expect the novel to live up to the high standard set by this introductory set of short stories.
Four fast-paced, highly enjoyable stories featuring Reno in each of the seasons. A clever idea that really works in this book, allowing the reader to move along with Reno during a year of her life.
Tight, compelling plotting, vivid characters,a sharp, wonderful protagonist and some laugh out loud moments. Stephen Campbell is a terrific, skilled writer. I loved this book and had trouble putting it down. Can't wait for the next one!
