Wow- incredibly detailed!

I am not a professional engine tuner or engineer- just an enthusiast who is determined to learn more about engine performance with the hopes of applying some of what I learn when tinkering on my motorcycle. The detailed information in this book is incredible- there are many aspects I really had no clue about prior to reading this. The author provides information in exquisite, almost painful detail. Admittedly I will never be able to apply many of the advanced aspects of performance tuning covered (such as testing various performance camshafts, changing valve geometry, etc.) however reading this book has provided great insight and information into the complexities of engines.

Although the book contains quite a few illustrations, many of the photos are quite dated and the drawn figures are a bit too simplistic by current standards. Nevertheless, the illustrations are functional and generally help to illustrate the points made. The book itself is hard-cover and of very high quality. The paper stock used for the pages is exceptionally heavy and good quality.

I bought this book a while ago - or perhaps was gifted it, and it's one of my favorite pieces of reading. This contains practical tips on how to extract the most from your engine, very clear explanations of how certain modifications should be carried out, and a good amount of quick reference material for guesstimation/napkin engineering. There's tons of information in here for the back-yard tinkerer, and also a great deal of material that applies to those who want to learn more about extracting the most performance out of an engine. I bought a copy for a friend for his birthday, and I'm sure he'll appreciate it as well.

I've spent a lot of time looking for a performance related book that reflected both real world ideas and understanding with a hint of engineering in the explanations and the Four-Stroke Performance Tuning has met and exceeded what I thought was available. Very straight forward and easily understood concepts are presented for several areas of engine performance ranging to even the most minute details and best of all with real data taken from samples that certainly solidify the points that are being made. Areas of design that I rarely see in more generic articles were discussed with full importance towards the end development of an engine such as exact valve opening geometry, squish zone shaping/location, and things like cold versus hot spark plugs and gaping with specific constraints in place. The reader is addressed as already having a fair amount of knowledge on the subjects and helps get things rolling a lot faster without drawn out simplified breakdowns on engine basics. Overall, the book answered what I really wanted and I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a good real world based book without a lot of the engineering derivations one might see in a hard core engineering setting while being practical and backing up with real numbers. I would also recommend a turbo charging book and possibly a newer ecu/ems tuning for EFI to complement the ideas in Four-Stroke Performance Tuning.

Fantastic book. Should be in the library of every engine tuner and race engine developer. This book will save you loads of money, helping you spend money in the right areas and avoid rip-off merchants and trendy go-faster propoganda so often featured in performance modification magazines.

If you are a young person starting out learning about engine modification this book will give you an excellent base, putting "a wise head on young shoulders".

The fact that this book has been engine tuner's standard reference for over 3 decades is testimony to its worth. The best tuning dollar you will ever spend!

I was loaned a copy of this book and decided to buy it for myself. Clearly updated over the years this work gives a good foundation for persons wanting to build their own engines. I am not a mechanical engineer nor a schooled mechanic but rebuild my own engines for my race cars. There is much to learn and this book has information that allows one to make decisions in formulating a build strategy. I have read many "tuning" books, received personal testimony and have developed many sources of information.This book helps collate all the data and presents it in a manageable form, easily digestible in an economic form.

This book is INSANELY detailed!!! That said, it's still easy enough to read for anyone with at least a basic background in mechanics. What I mean by that is that if you know the names of the major parts of a car you can reasonably understand this book, the author explains the rest. After only the first few pages I actually had a new perspective on Air Density and Altitude Relation and the correlation to engine power. After finishing the book I'm now many steps further on my way of becoming a performance specialist. GET THIS BOOK!!!!

This book is so full of excellent technical information it makes me want to go out to the shed and build a performance engine. Some parts were a little over my head but then again I'm not very experienced with working on engines. But for me there are so many smaller things I can try on my racebike and the more technical stuff I could farm out to a race shop. The main thing is I would know what I wanted for my bike to suit my particular situation. This book is packed full of ideas from a very smart race engineer.
