Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

These two books are based on the ancient Greek concept of the four temperaments (sanguine, melancholic, phlegmatic, and choleric). First-time author Maddron refers to them as colors-orange, gold, green, and blue, respectively. Each has a "ruling sign" (air, earth, water, and fire) and is typified by physicality, high standards, intellectualism, and sensitivity respectively. Chapters cover the characteristics of each personality type as well as various combinations, and the author includes an instrument for self-analysis. Particularly intriguing is Maddron's discussion of how colors complement one another in functional society and the importance of understanding and appreciating the strengths and limitations of each. Despite the risks inherent in oversimplifying people and society, Maddron's treatment is nonetheless very thoughtful. Rolfe's passionate examination of the role and function of the four temperaments in life translates into half handbook, half treatise. Like Maddron, Rolfe (The 7 Secrets of Successful Parents) describes the traits and characteristics typical of each humor and accounts for the blending of multiple humors. Reasonable and encouraging in tone, the book emphasizes that "the humors can only add to and not detract from your deepest understanding as your life unfolds." Rolfe uses a holistic and ambitious approach that sometimes meets with uneven results. Discussing all the humors at once is often confusing, and the nutritional suggestions feel incomplete. While neither author tries to pigeonhole people, both present "a set of lenses for looking at the world" and its inhabitants. Both are recommended; Maddron's narrower scope results in a clear, entertaining read, while Rolfe is for readers seeking a serious treatment.

In "The Four Temperments" Randy Rolfe does an excellent job of integrating ancient wisdom with modern theory as it relates to the 4 classic humors. Using questionairres and numerous easy to understand charts she guides the reader through a comprehensive tour of the 4 temperaments. She writes very clearly, with excellent knowledge of her subject and a full grasp of the 4 temperaments (choleric, melancholic, sanguine and phlegmatic).
The topic for most people would be considered a difficult, complicated and perhaps a controversial subject and yet the author manages in a concise and personal style to integrate practical ways of applying solutions to life's problems with each of the 4 different temperaments. She clearly understands and explains her subject in a way which can easily be applied to one's everyday life in the areas of career, relationships, emotions, personality style, health, nutrition and even weather patterns. People will find great value in reading this creative and well-organized book.

I give the book a plus on giving a quiz to find out what temperament a person has; but a big minus in not researching black bile and incorrectly assuming it is stool. Since I bought the book to research black bile more than what I have learned I was very disappointed with the book.

Probably by far the most informative and extensive book, one can access in the realm of modern literature, on the ancient humorologic study, of the 4 temperaments. About 8 years ago, I was introduced to what was universal knowledge for tens of centuries, of a science that has suffered the unfortunate fate, to be undermined into obscurity, by the most rascalous ignoramuses of recent times. It was orally presented to me in brief fragments, to a limited extent, by a friend. Upon it's very introduction, it left an indelible mark on me. Ever since I have but found it fascinating, and undeniable, furthering myself in the pursuit, to advance my understanding of it. Unlike this book, a vast majority of them that focus on the subject, hardly cover it. Brilliant insights, and a thorough outline of the four temperaments, furnishing the reader in precise detail of their respective properties, and their complimentary relations, within the temperamental order of one other, inundated with basic illustrations, that so well coincide with each temperaments distinctive character, along with a series of eye opening factuations, is what this book will not fail to easily provide you with. One's tendencies and inclinations cannot be defined any swifter, or explained any better, than by a humorologist. If one wishes to truly make it their business to advance themselves in the REAL study of human behavior, furnished by more evident observations, while remotely preceding any other study of it’s class, they will, with minimal discretion, wisely undertake this read.
