Editorial Reviews

In 1938, Four Daughters packed movie palaces, making a star out of John Garfield and winning hearts with its appealing depiction of the Lemps, a family that shares an unshakeable bond between parent and child, sister and sister. In 1939 the Lemps were back (Garfield's character, who died in the earlier film, makes a ghostly appearance) for another tender drama of everyday life. This time, all the sisters wed - even widowed Ann finds marital happiness - and joyfully prepare for the tears and laughter of motherhood. Returning Four Daughters talent includes the original cast, director Michael Curtiz, scripter Julius J. Epstein (this time working with his brother Philip G.) and Max Steiner, who provides another splendid score.

"Four Wives" is the continuing adventures of the Lemp clan, a wonderful family we first met in the minor masterpiece of Americana that is "Four Daughters". In this installment, two of the sisters deal with motherhood, one hunts down a fella she likes, and the fourth grieves over the loss of a man she didn't love while married to a man she does.

Over on the page for "Four Daughters", one reviewer calls the original movie "an almost perfect film." I disagree. I think it is perfect. It is a potent mix of great performances, stellar direction, and a luminous, powerful script. "Four Wives" is missing just one of the elements, but it is arguably the most important one: The script.

The script for this film just isn't there. The film wanders about, a major character (Eddie Albert's doctor) is introduced and then given alternatively nothing to do and then the wrong thing to do (psychiatric advice? from an MD? an MD supposedly working on miners?), and the absence of John Garfield leaves a gaping hole in the impact of the story (he does show up in oddly handled flashbacks). The film is very watchable because of the Curtiz's competent direction and the talented actors doing their level best, but the script just isn't there. Would you think it a better film if you hadn't seen the genuine masterpiece that is "Four Daughters"? Probably. If you haven't, bump this up one star.

Whether you will want to bother with this film is up to you. It takes the story in a slightly unpleasant direction, a place I would have preferred not to go with the characters.

A hidden classic from the '40s. A wonderful sample of the studio systems' mass appeal movies. It tastefully covered more darker issues and "real life" topics than I expected. Plus, it's a chance to see many of the directorial flourishes director Michael Curtiz put on display in his future films, including Casablanca and Mildred Pierce.
