Note that stone mortar and pestle sets need to be worn in before use. I prefer to wet-polish the working surfaces by forcefully grinding with the pestle until the textures of both surfaces are knocked down. Afterwards, I dry-grind small portions of uncooked rice until the resulting rice powder is colorless.
Most of the mortars and pestles I had found were so small and this one seemed about the right size for what I do I can easily fit my hand in there and there's enough room to put in everything I've ever needed to crush or ground up. In terms of material I couldn't have picked a better choice. This one is heavier than I expected. It's probably at least 8-10 pounds (maybe exaggerating - not sure)? So, it's definitely sturdy, easy to clean and I would recommend this in a heartbeat for anyone looking to purchase a mortar and pestle.
So, I'm not sure how this stacks up over vast amounts and years of usage, but for the person who will just use this when they need it, I'd say go for it. It's definitely worth the money.
Seasoning it was fairly straightforward, spent 20-30 minutes or so pulverizing dry rice followed by salt w oil to be sure there wasn't any rock dust still. It's heavy, but then it is a rather large chunk of rock! It's beautiful too, I am very happy w my choice of the dark granite.

I wish it came with a durable brush to remove the fine spice powder at the surface, but that's not a flaw just a suggestion. I bought my own brush!
The outside is quite rough. Really rough. So its a bit hard to hold. Under side is smooth, and the pestle is smooth. Waaaay thicker than it needs to be. It is 4.25"tall but the inside chamber is only 2.25"deep. Its about 6.5"wide in diameter but the inside chamber is about 4.30"wide (diameter). So there is 1"inch of thickness all around. The pestle is 6.5"long; 2"diameter base thickest part, and tapers to 1"thickness(diameter) on the top thinest part.
Needless to say, I am not pleased. Canadian Tire seems to have a better one on their shelf. I might try that one.
I do not recommend it.
Overall I am quite satisfied with the product, though it does take quite a bit of breaking in to season the surface so it's ready to use. A lot of people online recommended using rice, but i found it quite inificent since you waste a lot of your energy pounding and grinding to the right size to get things going. I found that Corse salt and oil worked quite well.
