I used 'DuPont Teflon Non-Stick Dry-Film Lubricant Aerosol Spray' which I had on hand and have used to lubricate window slides, drawer glides, delicate gears and other things where a thick silicone or other lubricant might gum up the works and/or attract FOD.
I'm going to stick with a 2 star review given that I had to fix this to make it work, the bell is hard to hear if you're not in the same room and a ring length of only about 2-3 seconds. If the supplier addresses the quality control and design issues in future revs of this timer, it could be a five star product. If you need a more accurate timer, louder and with a longer ring time, I'd go something else, probably a digital model.
Nice retro design, adequate magnet on flat, smooth surfaces, good price. Unfortunately, the first time I used it the timer stuck at 26 minutes from a 55 minute count down. Second time same thing. I may open it up and lubricate the interior to see if that helps. The ring is only about 3 seconds and not very loud. This would be a great product if it didn't have quality control and design issues.
One caveat, as described in the manual, is that you have to turn the dial to 55 minutes and then turn it back to the time you want. This winds the 5 second alarm ringer. If you try to use this as a traditional mechanical timer by just moving it from 0 to the desired setting it will start ticking but the alarm won't ring.
It's beginning to not ring or count down.
I always turn it to the "zero" mark and then back down to the time required. Sometimes the bell doesn't even go off after it has counted down.
The bell is not loud and the timer needs to be in the same room you are in to hear it (if it goes of at all).
The magnet is good and strong but it needs to function as a timer... not a fridge magnet.
The only thing this timer has in it's favour... is good looks.
Unfortunately I'll be looking for a different brand now.
That's what I do and I haven't had a single problem in the 4 months I have been using it -- constantly. I adore the look and color (I got the sky blue) and love how I can keep it out of the way on my fridge wall, where the magnet is strong enough to work on that textured surface. The ring is loud enough to hear in the next room, and it rings for a LONG time (unlike the single loud ding my ancient, venerable Electrolux used to give out).
I've also had zero issues with timer inaccuracy, perhaps because I'm religious about always turning it all the way forward before setting my desired time. Although I'm not much of a baker (where so many things must be exact), this timer seems to keep accurate time for all sorts of tasks, including boiling eggs, cooking corn, etc. -- where any overcooking would spoil the results.
There are a couple of oddities:
-- It does help to keep the timer vertical (i.e. stuck on a surface like refrigerator wall), as it doesn't keep time well lying flat.
-- Mine rings about 30 seconds BEFORE the actual timer is done. Not sure if this is intentional (by the time you respond, your cooking will exactly be done?), or just an oddity of the unit I received. But I don't dislike it.
The timer is so cute I'm tempted to replace it, but aesthetics aren't worth burned food. :(
