The product details lists the dimensions as "5.1 x 11.5 x 5.1 inches". It's not clear which dimensions on the bowl each of these measurements refers to.
My bowl has a 11.75 inch diameter at the top, about a 6.5 inch diameter at the bottom and is 5.1 inches deep. Hope that helps you get a clearer idea of the size.
I did read the other reviews and no one else had this issue, so maybe I got the short straw, but won't be reordering.
I have a family of 5 so I thought I'd use the 8-qt bowls a lot more. However, this size bowl is constantly in use and the larger ones are rarely used. You can mix 2 boxes of cake mix in this size with room to spare. I am also going to get a few of the 1.25 quart bowls for when I'm making smaller batches of foods, but I think this size will be my default choice most of the time.
The ONLY issue I had with this bowl: It was difficult to get it truly clean before I used it the first time. I ran it through the dishwasher and it had a whitish film on it. I hand-washed and scrubbed it and discovered a graying residue (metal "stuff," I'm guessing) on the washcloth. So before you mix in it, take extra precautions to make sure it's completely clean. You'll need to use elbow grease to accomplish this because the dishwasher just isn't enough. The whitish film re-appeared the first 3 times it went through the dishwasher -- thankfully there was no more gray residue -- but a quick rub with a towel cleaned it off. Since then it's washed perfectly every time. If this were a more expensive Oxo product I would have docked a star, but because it didn't last long and because the product was so inexpensive and perfect in every other way, I decided all 5 stars were deserved.
It holds less than 3 quarts, to my measurement, but that will not change my opinion of how useful it will be to me. I have purchased a few of the larger sizes and the smaller size of this bowl so I should be able to handle any cooking and baking task.
Very small. It's only 1/2 quart. It's made of sturdy but not very heavy stainless steel. It is somewhere between a small mixing bowl and a prep bowl. Great for mixing spices, holding lime zest while you juice the lime, holding 11/2 cups of sugar for a recipe. I like them because they are lightweight and easy to get down from a shelf. They won't tip and if I should knock one over it won't break like the cereal bowls I used to use.
I don't like the picture they use because It does give the impression there are several bowls and online shopping for an inexpensive little item like this doesn't need to be complicated. A picture of the bowl next to a gallon milk jug would be great to help judged size visually.
And yes, the metal is thinner on this bowl than all the others I have (the bottom easily pops in and out), but that didn't bother me so much. Not knowing what is leaching off this bowl makes this a no-win purchase. Bummer, as I liked the size!
