My new Samsung HDTV comes with a 3.5mm mini-jack (AKA "headphone jack") that only outputs at a fixed and very loud volume that cannot be adjusted with the remote like my old TV. Just connect this cable to your jack and headphones and you now have a way to turn down the sound! Note: this will only turn down and not turn up the sound. To turn up sound you will need some kind of powered system.
The control is easy to adjust. Some other models have a much smaller controller that are said to be difficult to adjust.
This is an incredibly cheap and perfect solution for your new HDTV. The cable measures 39 inches end to end. The volume adjuster is at inches 8-9 from the end of your headphone cable.

Edit: After just 4 months of use it seems the wire has a short somewhere. Wiggling the connection will sometimes fix the problem but as of today 5/28/14 they no longer work at all. It is now junk...

The male piece is just small enough to fit into any input, this was important to me because all of my phone's cases are rather bulky and if the male tip was too large the case would keep it from sitting securely. The volume adjustment knob doesn't feel cheap and works well so far, time will tell. As far as first impressions go however I am very happy with the purchase.

I bought it for my wife, and she was very happy with it initially. She says the volume regulation range was really good and you could mute the sound completely, The cord is long enough and the regulator isn't bulky. Unfortunately, after just few weeks of use, it stopped working. Not sure why, or what broke, but all of the sudden the sound was very faint at the loudest setting, barely audible.

Two problems with this product. One: There is very little transition between high volume and low volume. it seems as if it is full blast, very quite or off. There are no in betweens. Two. this thing broke apart the first day I used it in my pocket. I glued it back together and it works as good as it ever did... which is crappy. Very poor product in my opinion.

The transition in volume between full on and silent was very short; it was hard to find the "sweet spot" of an intermediate volume. It was easier just to set it full on and use my device's volume control. Which seems to defeat the purpose of having an in-line volume control, doesn't it? After 5 months of light use, it went dead.

Solves a major issue that I experienced with my iPad, iPod Classic and my Macbook: even at the lowest setting, the volume was too loud. I have worked to try and lower the volume by using difference earphones, blocking the output speaker with tape, and researching online (I am well aware of the 1/4 square micro-volume adjustment on Macbooks using shift-option; for those that do not, search it and it might solve your issue). Nothing worked well for me. Still, too loud and no way to adjust down. I work in a quiet environment, usually a public library quiet room, and need low-volume sound.

This cord solved my issue. I can now turn the volume squares up about half way on the MacBook or iPad or iPod, and then use the volume on the cable to adjust from completely off (even though the squares are still on half, about 5-6 squares) to barely audible, to loud. It's a Godsend as, with the rotary dial, I have no issues setting it just right. The in-line volume control on Apple earbuds, for instance, still control the squares on the volume bar, so no help at all. This volume control work independently of the control built into the device (e.g. iPad) itself.

Some have commented on these types of in-line controls that the sound quality is compromised. I would not know as I listen to it so softly that there is no noted compromise. It seems to make, even when I turn it up, no difference in sound quality at all.

The point dedication is for the build of this device. It is extremely thin and frail looking, looks like it could be manufactured for about a dollar, and only time will tell if it lasts. I will update if it breaks or crackles and loosens. For now, I appreciate the 3 foot extension on the Apple Earbuds, and I use this daily with success.

I have purchased 4 inline volume controls that range from $7.00 to $26.00. The Sennheiser ($26.00) was the only one that worked flawlessly. Until I took a chance on the Foxnovo and it has worked perfectly. No dead spots or loosing the left or right ear. I only have about 5 hrs run time, but so far so good. For $6.95 it`s a no brainer!

This extension cord used between a mp3 and helmet speakers did not work for us. It distorts the sound and got worse quickly. I wanted it to have a quick volume control on my music while riding a motorcycle. Won't buy anything like this again.
