Fractal Fusion is a feast for the eyes. In modern culinary terms, fusion means a mixing of cultural foods. This term is used here to represent a mixing of cultural art and literature. A fractal is a modern mathematical subset representing natural elements that can be plotted in color on a computer,however this is not about the math, it is about art. From there many digital techniques have been employed to tease out the most beautiful representations of the representative fractal. The ancient Japanese Haiga is a form where a Haiku was associated with a wood cut or drawing and more recently a photograph. Here the elements of Haiku or Senryu are incorporated to represent as best it can, modern digital abstract art based on Fractal math. It is at times a difficult task and as in the fractal, one must use their imagination.

About the Author

Thomas G. Conally, a career chemist and chemistry educator, got interested in fractals about 15 years ago and in that time has learned many techniques to create fractals and enhance them including FracTint, Photoshop elements, Paintshop Pro, and others. He is interested in digital art, photography, computers, origami and boomerangs. In 1995 he became proficient in making and throwing boomerangs, and started a small business selling those boomerangs on the internet under the name "Flying Frog Boomerangs". That was a very successful side business until 2005 when he opted to pursue other options. In 2007 he exhibited 60 original fractal prints at Elon University in a one man show. In 2008, he was artist of the month in Eden, NC exhibiting 80 pieces of fractal art at the public library and at the gallery in the Eden municipal building. He has enjoyed haiku for years and decided to create a book of fractals and haiku. Conally is an Amateur Radio operator, NC4TC, and lives with his wife Faye and two cats in central NC.

A boomerang thrower.

Fractal Fun

Fractal Fusion could have easily been named Fascinating Fun.
Mr. Conally displays a wide range of beautiful fractal images, each with an original poem relating to the image.
I enjoyed looking at the images and interpreting them first, then reading the poem. Sometimes the poem would reflect the same thing I had seen in the image and other times, after reading the poem, I would see the image in a whole different way. The simplicity of the haiku in contrast with the complex patterns of the fractals makes this an interesting and fun book to read.
