Author Chris Shugart likes to think of himself as the Forrest Gump of Scientology. He was both witness and activist in some of Scientology’s most defining moments. As the Church grew, it was also gaining notoriety. This was the era of deprogrammers, counter-intelligence operations, and the Guardians Office FBI raids. For thirty years, Chris took part in shady financial deals, Church sanctioned covert activities, and just about every ludicrous exploit in which a Scientologist could possibly participate.…right away, we liked how Chris presented his book, and the humble way he positioned it.…what we often hear from the religious studies professors is that they want accounts not about the famous names in the church but from the rank and file…Shugart sure delivers that, and in a spare, well-written style…"— Tony Ortega, journalist and best-selling author

I am biased because I was there for some of this story but with that disclosure, I couldn't put this thing down. I read it in one sitting to the annoyance of my wife and our normal nightly "tv time". It's written at just the right pace for me. Not too slow to get boring, and not so fast I couldn't follow it. If you are or have been a Scientologist, you definitely need to read this for your own sanity and financial health. If you are not, it will really help you understand how people get roped into giving up money for causes and perhaps avoid it happening to you too.

The author recounts what attracted him to Scientology, and his experiences getting more and more deeply involved. An honest look at the thought processes of a believer who kept looking for the good, and left when the bad became too much. Plenty of insight into how a Scientology "org" or local "church" is truly run - with all the manipulation and deception involved. There are no daring escapes (a la Blown For Good) but Shugart's process is just as fascinating from a psychological point of view. I like that he doesn't try to express anyone's thoughts but his own (including his wife's). An eye-opening read if you are interested in the psychological stages of belief.

This book offers the perspective of a Scientologist bled financially for years. A different type of abuse from many of the other published experiences. I hope Chris follows this book with another which explains HOW he ever got himself out of the credit Hell that was his life as a practicing "church" member!

An entertaining, very readable first person account of what you would call a "run of the mill" Scientologist. No shocking stories from the Sea Org, just the daily grind of a staff member and public, dealing with church bureaucracy and constantly hit up for more and more money - which can be just as harrowing.

Chris Shugart can write. I wish he would write more.

I’d read anything on Scientology he’d write.

He describes Scientology’s fundraising firsthand better than anyone has ever done before.

Great book with insight from someone who has seen so much, too much of Scientology. May this book help to end this cult.

Unique among memoirs of former Scientologists, the author was not at the 'top' of the Scientology food chain, Although he and his wife did achieve high 'course levels': OT VII, and VIII. What the book does best is the following: describing the over-the-top, layer-upon-layer bureaucracy of the organization; how utterly controlling it is, and how they Demand perfection from their members; and, most of all their ruthless pursuit of every penny of their members' money.
Their beliefs are SO extreme: Only Scientology can 'save' our world; and their Paranoia has no bounds. When the Twin Towers were hit, the leaders immediately turned to their members (once again) for $, claiming it was a sign that Scientology would be 'picked on' (again). Additionally, as Hubbard hated psychiatry, and blamed all the ills in the world on it, the author was told that 9/11 occurred due to " Ben Ladn's
psychiatrist".
My only complaints are that I wish the author had examined Why he joined, in the first place, and Why he continued to stick with this horrid Organization, even after they took so much of his money.

Interesting story that most ex-scientologists will find paralells a lot of their own experiences. Worthwhile read would recommend to others.

I purchased this book because I'd previously read all the books by the more vocal and better known former members. I didn't really know what to expect. WOW. This book does an amazing job of unwrapping the extraordinarily intense regging that the average sci follower goes through. It's so intense that you actually feel very uncomfortable just reading it. At least it leads to a happy ending. Thoroughly worth reading. Wear your S.P badges with pride.

A great book written by a person who was an "ordinary" member of the scientology cult. It shows how people can be sucked into it, and details the relentless demands for money from it's members.
