This book is breath taking. Xavier and Melanie captivated me from page one. This story is a roller-coaster of emotions. You will laugh out loud, have your heart twist in your chest, you will cry ugly tears and you will want to slap some sense into both of these characters. The story is angsty but I knew this was Sloan’s way of writing. Her other book I read was very angsty too. Her books stir real emotions in the pages.
Fragile Bonds left me fragile after reading it. I had a bit of a book hangover. Xavier and Melanie have been apart for six years after a falling out that turns out to be a misunderstanding. Friendships are lost and love is renewed. When you meet Xavier’s family you will love them and become invested in them. Melanie and Xavier are very insecure about their relationship and where it should go but all ends well. I would love to see Brayden get a HEA. The romance in this story is very sweet and endearing.
The flow of this story is wonderful. You feel as though you are right in the book with the characters. I enjoyed Sloan’s descriptive writing in this book. I was not over powering it was just right.
This is a stand-alone book. I will continue to read Sloan Johnson’s book and I highly recommend this book.
“You’ve given me your trust, which is everything. This heart is a symbol of my love for you. I cherish your gift every moment of every day and promise that I will do everything I can keep from hurting you. You, Melanie Elaine Erickson, are the world to me. I love you.” – Xavier
I think everyone has that one person in their lives that can affect them, even if it’s been twenty years and they separated on bad terms, and Xavier is mine. – Melanie
“I love you Melanie. I know I said that to you before and then hurt you, but I need you to know that this time will be different.” – Xavier
“You were the first man I ever loved, and I want you to be the last.” - Melanie
Such is the case with Xavior and Melly, they believed once they would spend the rest of their lives together, but life didn't turn out that way and years later Melly takes an assignment to assist Alyssa with her hospice needs. Knowing who Alyssa's husband, Xavior, is the man she never got over she continues with assisting the family with all needs to make life as normal as possible while they endure the concept of a future without her. Xavior is torn by Melly's existence, but soon welcomes her in his life and in the lives of his family seeing what an impact she has brought to their lives for the best of a horrible situation. What more can he do to be husband to the woman he married knowing in his heart he never forgot the woman he left behind. With his wife's death and the future being uncertain he relocates him and his young son to a place to find himself again wanting to be a better father, but mostly to see if he can rid himself of the guilt of loving another woman with his wife recently put to ground. He loved his wife, but would Alyssa's last request be something he could do?
Sloan, I did not cry while I read your story. I had to put the book down several times to compose myself, but I did not share a tear. Writing this review for you, I cried like a baby, because you got it right. Life after death is sometimes the most painful and most rewarding time of a person's life. This is a masterpiece and I am very proud to have read your work. Your work is the sound of one voice...the living.
I totally and 100% recommend this story to anyone looking for a contemporary romance that contains a story that will break your heart and heal it all in the same book.
