About the Author
Night owl, Dorito lover, and quiet eccentric - Kristina Circelli is the author of several fiction novels, including The Helping Hands series, The Whisper Legacy, The Never, and The Sour Orange Derby. Her latest series, The Whisper Legacy, features Beyond the Western Sun. This book is what all fantasy adventures must strive to be: a complex, intricate examination of human emotion set within the context of worlds known only in our imagination. Melding fantasy and legend in an epic quest, this series signals the arrival of Kristina Circelli as a master storyteller and an important voice in Native American literature. A descendent of the Cherokee nation and niece of a Cherokee elder, Circelli holds both a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in English from the University of North Florida, where she teaches creative writing. She also heads Red Road Editing, a full-service editing company for independent authors and commercial clients. She currently resides in Jacksonville, Florida with her husband, Seth, and cats, Lord Finnegin the Fierce and Mr. Malachi the Mighty.

I was not sure as I started reading if this would be a book for me, or one that I would be able to recommend to my daughter, who is a member of the target audience for this book. I focused too much on the fact that she tries to take her life, and that she was a broken character. I usually don't connect with these types of characters or stories very well, but Circelli was able to pull me in and hook me!
This book is about taking your life back! Evangeline's struggle and her connection with the animals at the reserve help to pull her back into a life that she feels is worth living. There are highs and lows in her struggle, as it is in real life, and I found myself living on an emotional roller coaster with her as she works through her time at the preserve. By writing this in the third person, the reader is able to see the puzzlement of the others around Evangeline as they try to help this injured teen. This gives a realistic quality to the story, for don't we all struggle to understand the motivations behind the actions taken by those nearest to us, especially when those actions seem to be unhealthy?
As you read this, not only will you need tissues ready, but have room around you, because you will want to punch the air and shout, "Yes!"! Read this with a family member, and great discussions will ensue!
From a Reader's Perspective:
Damaged. That's the word I think when Evangeline Frost comes to mind. So many times I wanted to slap her mother, cradle Evangeline, and shake sense into the people around her. She was so well developed through the book, and the author didn't need to use infodumps to tell me what happened. It came through natural development of the girl's healing process. There's no love triangle in this story. It's not about that, and would've cheapened the message the author is trying to send: You need to be okay with yourself. It's not about falling down; it's about rising from the ashes of your tragedy to stand strong on your own.
And, oh, the animals! They were lovely, well rounded, and personable. Yeah, even through the text. Loved them!
From an Editor's Perspective:
Pronouns were here and there, but I find a lot of that. It didn't eclipse the read. There was one place near the end where Jett is talking, and I had to read it a couple of times to understand it was misuse of a word. He says they're going to talk to the African team about raising awareness regarding conversation. I'm pretty sure it should be conservation. But it was just one error, and I'm not gonna ding the edit for it. Easy miss.
1 Star for making me cry like a baby
1 Star for no infodumps to build backstory
1 Star for leaving out the love triangle
1 Star for getting me to connect on a deep level with every character (including Ruke the giraffe)
1 Star for editing
Overall, 5 out of 5 stars. A book worthy of your bookshelf, both digital and tangible. You'll want to read it again.
This was one of those books you see the cover and are stunned, so you move to the description and half way through just stop and one click it. Yes that's how this story started for me a gorgeous cover and a synopsis that between the lines just told me to stop and read the book, because I will have you crying and frustrated for the next few hours of your day. But in the touch your heart kind of way.
This story was amazing I can't say I've read anything like it and I'm so thrilled I got to. The characters are so well written and I swear I felt like this movie was playing in my head I just would randomly think please someone create this as a movie and don't ruin it because this right here will be the next movie ill be taking the tissue box with me! Sigh I love animals and nature and everything was here, I was this great program that I hope is real if not should be because I felt as though I learned something even if it was all fiction. Evangeline was this main character that you didn't feel sorry for because of hard time etc sure I felt bad but I was rooting for her so loud in my head I could've been a cheerleader lol
I wish her and Caster got a bit closer It seemed a few hints were dropped toward the end but they never did get that little "happy ever after" which had me a bit sad an wanting more. But all around this will one day be a book I'd love to have on my bookcase. Till then my kindle and I are forever great full to have had the pleasure of reading this. 10BRILLIANT STARS!
