The cause of her fear is very uncomfortable and not at all escapist, but serious rather than the often vapid or silly problems of a romantic heroine.
Reading about abuse, violent abuse, told second hand isn't much fun.
I want to give this 4.5 stars, with a caution that do read it, but not if it's going to bring up personal memories, and read it when the time is right.
It take a lot to trust again, and a very special person to lead you to trust them. This was sad but so true to what many suffer today as well as back then.
Beautifully written Elizabeth!

Verena , the heroine, lives a life under considerable strain. She is a companion to her frail mother who has been systematically physically abused by her second husband. Her mother feels doubly guilty because she relies on her daughter, and because she has run away from her husband.
Verena lives in constant fear her mother will be will be found and persuaded to return to him. She is determined to keep them apart.
It is all finally resolved and the story ends happily, but the constraint and misery permeates the atmosphere of the novel, and there are only a few brief moments when everyone is relaxed and happy.
Verena, mysterious in the extreme, has captivated Denzell to the point that he ardently pursues her with all his well practised charm only to be coldly rebuffed time after time. But ... as the story unravels several clues lead him to believe this young woman is not so standoffish and unfeeling as she pretends, that maybe she wears this mask to shield herself from a cruel world. Thereafter, he sets out to solve the mystery of her unlikely presence in a small, out of the way country village - waiting for the mask to slip ...
This one is a really good one. Lots of suspense. Immensely absorbing.
