M. R. Field has written such a lovely coming of age story that includes so many life experiences (bullying, crushes, life-long friendships, abuse, heartbreak and redemption) using so many interesting facets that I can’t stop thinking about it.
To make matters even more interesting it takes place in Australia so you get a lot of cheeky language that I thoroughly enjoyed. On top of that, I personally got a huge kick out of reading about Italian immigrants who settled in Australia. The author paints such an entertaining, accurate and heartfelt picture of this immigrant family that I honestly felt at one point I was sitting in the kitchen with my own Italian grandmother. Nothing like smelling sauce while you’re reading because the spices were wafting off the page.
Take a group of young girls and a group of older guys that grew up together and what do you get? A lot of entertaining stories of the trials and tribulations of puberty, good and bad family relations, and some angst that will lead you to how they all ended up. And where they end up is very steamy at times :-)
Interesting and colorful characters will keep your attention throughout.
I look forward to reading more of M. R. Field’s work.
This book was great for the authors debut. Loved the cover. I can not wait to read the next installment in Running on Empty Collection.
This contemporary, young adult love story has taken my breath away. I even contacted the author to ask if this is her first book. The quality of this story and how it's been able to draw such emotional responses from me needs to be commended and that was just from the first quarter of the book. The author is truly gifted and has just pretty much made it a safe bet that she is on my automatic buy list. I have read works by seasoned authors that have fallen well short of this well scripted and executed story.
There are so many layers to this story and that’s why I was asking ‘is this your first book?’ I hope the author wasn’t offended because her work has just slayed me. She has a fresh and intriguing writing style that flowed wonderfully. I was fist pumping, I was yelling NO at the kindle, I was tearing up and grinning like an idiot. This book packs an emotional wallop and the multi-layered compelling characters who managed to get under my skin – I just couldn’t put this book down! Even the bullies had me wondering about their story and why they were the way they were. I even had thoughts of cancelling a kids play date (yes, bad mummy but I didn’t cancel) to keep reading.
This is a fast paced, emotional rollercoaster that will deliver. I was apprehensive to be so fulfilled by the first quarter of the book that I was thinking it might have all come crashing down. I love it when a book proves me wrong.Read more ›
Beatrice (Trice) the daughter of immigrant parents, struggles to ignore bullies while immersing herself in her passion for dance. She feels betrayed when her brother Robbie's best friend Alex who she has always been close with, starts dating mean girl Stacey.
"What did you do when one of your closest friends broke your heart? You avoided them. You ignored them. You pushed yourself to try to forget that they were ever a part of your life."
Alex, the boy next door, tries to hide the physical and emotional abuse that he suffers at the hand of an alcoholic father, but it has been drilled into him that he is worthless. He loves Beatrice but doesn't want to do anything to lose the friendship they have.
" I could think of any moment and see him weaved throughout it. It was as though his soul was interwoven with mine."
This story drew me right in. I want more of this world, of these characters, Trice, Alex, Robbie, Hazel, Trin, and Theo. I've already fallen in love with all of them!
“But you are my forever, Bea. You were destined to be mine. Even if we took forever to get here, I wouldn’t change a thing. We weren’t ready before, but we are ready now. Every inch of my soul was born to love you. I’d travel through hell to get to you. You are my paradise."
