In this voyage, the readers dance with Ronsard's muses and weep in the Gastine Forest; they sail on the Bourget Lake, watch the decimation of the Grande Army at Waterloo, and join the French Resistance at the call of Verlaine.
--Voyage in Poetry
Through this literary voyage, the author unfolds the flowering of French poetry and its repercution in English. The style is indeed very French and the poets' emotions become transparent. --French and Poetry
The history of France, the biography of the poets and the poems in French and in English, the whole book is a pleasure for people who do not or hardly know French but love it. I am impatient to get the audio-book. --France and its Romantics
From the Author
Why another compilation of French poetry in English? There are indeed many translations of Ronsard, Baudelaire, Hugo, and many more; but most have been done by English-speaking poets. They are very beautiful but somewhat different. It seems to me that in their works, the translators brilliantly convey their own interpretation and feeling but not the original poets'emotions. Do English people feel differently? No, they express their feelings differently; their style is an imprint of their culture. Having lived in Australia for more than twenty years, unsurprisingly my English has improved but my style remains the same and without pretention, I decided to make a compilation of the works of the greatest poets of France through the centuries with a brief history of France and a short biography of the poets. The readers therefore voyage in the poets'world and life so they understand and ultimately feel their emotions. This was my goal.
