Drake had a fleet of five ships and barks containing 164 men. He set sail on December 13. The trip ended on November 3, 1580, the third year of the voyage. The secret goal of the journey was that the queen of England hired Drake as a pirate to intercept the gold and jewels the Spanish were looting from South America. Drake failed this mission and his subsequent attempts and died of fever near Panama in 1596 when he was 55.
Francis Perry describes the lands the ships visited during the three-year sailing, the people and animals encountered, and the difficulties and adventures experienced.
