Born to a family of Italian Immigrants, they would escape northern Italy from Mussolini's fascist regime. The Lord would allow him at an early age to see the descrepancies between the poor and rich that would later encompass how today he reflects his heart to the people. Called to the priesthood at the age of 17, he would still spend some years teaching in 5 areas including philosophy and theology. After becoming a Jesuit Priest, the Dirty War was believed by him to be the cause of lack of unity for those different politically and socioeconomically.
As he rose in the ranks from Bishop to Cardinal the Authors will share Francis's beliefs in serving with humility while refusing the specialities granted to popes today. referred to as a peacemaker he would often be found serving in the slums of the city.
He has strong opposition to abortion, same sex marriage and women being ordained to the Priesthood. While he is against these he is still a firm believer in truth with an open heart to love those who may be different, modeling the mercy of Christ.
This book gave me a great panoramic view of why Pope Francis does what he does and how his life shaped who he is today. A great read to gain greater understanding in this popular Pope.
This book was profound in it's reminding us of who we are, where our hearts should be, what is expected of us, and what our priorities should be. We have fallen far from our teachings and have been wandering in a mixed up world that encourages us to think of ourselves first.
His story pulled me because of the way he has lived his life. He didn't want all the fancy things he could have just because of his position in the church. No white stole for him, no special robe, no papal apartment as in the past, no eating anywhere but with the people that he could interact with, no being secluded when he could be out and talking to all people of different countries as well as Rome. He has already proven with his lifestyle what is important to him - and thankfully, what is not important.
This Pope is truly living a life that sets an exemplary example of how we all should be living. I believe with God's blessing upon him he will change the way people of all religions are perceived. May he have many, many more years ahead because the World needs him. Having said this, please read this book. You will be touched and you are sure to learn something new which may change your life.
