This is a gem that features McCann and one his most solid rhythm sections (Herbie Lewis on bass and Ron Jefferson on drums) live. This album is actually the entire 'In San Francisco" recorded in December 1960 for the Pacific Jazz label at the Jazz Workshop. That album is the first seven tracks.
The remaining tracks are from the same live performances in San Francisco, but are not the complete album titled From The Top Of The Barrel. That album was recorded at The Bit in Los Angeles and includes three tracks not on this album (Three Slaves, On Green Dolphin Street and Set Call.) Moreover, the missing tracks feature McCann and Jefferson, but Leroy Vinnegar is on bass - hopefully that album will be reissued one of these days as well.
Listen to the sound samples and you will hear McCann and his rhythm section performing energetically on each track. Also of interest is four of the eleven tracks are McCann's own compositions, which showcase his talents as both a pianist and composer.
If you are a fan this album is an opportunity to obtain some of McCann's earlier work that is otherwise out of print. This period in his career is my favorite, but regardless of your own favorite periods, the music shows where he was musically at this point and strongly hints where he was headed.

I have had the LP version since it came out in 1960. Has been unplayable for years now. I was delighted to find it on Amazon, ordered it immediately. Upon arrival I noticed it contained 4 extra tracks that didn't make it the LP. This is a must have for 60 jazzers.
