Franglais teaches you 30 rules to identify English words, that you probably already know, and transform these words into a very large working French vocabulary. This book does not attempt to teach you French grammar or even teach you the basics of the French language. It's purpose is to show that you already know a tremendous number of French words and give you the confidence to learn more.
These simple rules are also suitable for older children learning French.
For example, this descriptions contains the words “technique” and “vocabulary”. These are both of French origin. The word “technique” has the same spelling and the same meaning in French. There are 20 commonly used English words ending in ~que which are the same so you've just instantly added these 20 words to your French vocabulary.
The word vocabulary can be changed into the French word vocabulaire by replacing the ~ary ending with the ~aire ending. There are 52 commonly used English words ending in ~ary which by applying this rule you can now transform into French words.
- Most words ending in ~able are the same
- Most words ending in ~ible are the same.
- Most words ending in ~ion are the same.
- Most words ending in ~que are the same
- Most words ending in ~ary change their ending to ~aire
There are also many English and French words not covered by these simple rules which have found their way into every-day language. These provide an entertaining diversion from learning the rules.
