This book is an interesting artifact in itself, collecting some impressive photographs of buildings erected only in the last two decades and trying to contextualize them in the former Soviet Union.
There are three short essays included. One is by photographer Herfort in which he gives a little insight into his technical process and how he became interested in these buildings. The others are more critical and provide much-needed background information; they're actually quite unsparingly harsh on the culture and designers that produced this architecture. I would have liked these essays to be longer.
But this is a photography book and the photos do also speak for themselves to a certain extent. They are presented sans text or captions (there's a list in the back), because part of the point is that they are interchangeable. This is architecture without thought to any one building's ultimate purpose, but for maximum psychic impact.
