The comprehensive source for as-built plans of Wright's work

Published to critical acclaim more than a decade ago,
The Frank Lloyd Wright Companion brought together in one volume all the essential descriptions, photographs, and plans of everything built by America's most famous architect. Now, for this handsomely produced revised edition, William Allin Storrer brings the history of every Wright structure up to the present.

Storrer treats the full range of Wright's architecture—from vacation cottages in Montana and Michigan, to such monuments of modernism as the Johnson Wax Building and the Guggenheim Museum, to buildings completed after Wright’s death in 1959. Since the first edition, some of Wright’s buildings have been relocated, some have been refurbished, and, sadly, some have even been destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Storrer documents these changes and includes new information about the extent of Wright’s work on the buildings, the contributions of his associates, and the details of his business arrangements. Wright aficionados will be especially pleased to find comprehensive coverage of the newly discovered Mitchell residence in Racine, Wisconsin.

Organized chronologically,
The Frank Lloyd Wright Companion features a description of each building that details the history of its design, construction, and ownership. Floor plans allow readers intimate access to each of Wright’s built works. With nearly 1,000 photographs (many new to this edition), elevations, historical images, and floor plans that show changes in Wright’s preliminary plans, this reference is unmatched in its authority. The indispensable centerpiece of any Wright collection, the newly revised Companion is a must for any serious library of art and architecture.

My wife and I have made a hobby of studying Frank Lloyd Wright's residential architecture. We've visited Wright designed homes throughout the country and hope to build a Wright inspired Usonian-type retirement home. We have collected 20+ books depicting Wright's work to better inform ourselves and a yet to be selected architect and contractor of the proportions and details required to create "the look" we want to achieve. Of all the volumes in our collection, we find this one most useful--so useful that we will soon replace it because we've broken the binding lugging it around with too many pages of personal notes stuffed inside. It contains many things other works do not. Among them are the actual street address of every Wright-designed structure still standing and measured drawings of each construction. The drawings are important because the more commonly published original plans were often changed in the field to accommodate real world construction requirements. The structures are presented in chronological order and effectively demonstrate the refinement of Wright's design philosophy over time. This aspect is enhanced by insightful author's notes that succinctly describe the trend in Wright's evolving pursuit of a uniquely American architecture from era to era a single page that is often more informative than the chapter devoted to the same subject in other works. It isn't a "coffee table" book. Photos are black and white to better depict proportions and details without the distraction of color. For that reason, it is best used in conjunction with a more photographically-oriented volume and pairs well with Frank Lloyd Wright The Houses or, for those most interested in Wright's later works, Frank Lloyd Wright Mid-Century Modern. (Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian Houses: Designs for Moderate Cost One-Family Homes also compliments this book for those primarily interested in mid-Century Modern design.) Cross referencing to Storrer's work is, however, key to getting the most out of these other volumes.

The revised edition is better organized than the original edition. A great book about wonderful architecture by Frank Lloyd Wright. If you want to see the progress of his work from beginning to the end of his life this is the book to get. The only book, books better are a sixteen plus volume collection that cost a hundred hundred dollars a book when I was a poor architecture student and could only starve my self long enough to buy five of them from the first Usionain to the early fifties - full set went for 4k plus big architectural book store on the west coast. There are other books that go into greater depth of a particular style, or building during a particular period, but this shows you all of it, and what to look for. The only things missing are his unbuilt projects. There are a lot pictures and floor plans that fill half pages. 467 pages about 433 projects, with ten to twelve pages more those projects addresses.

If not anardent fan of FLW the price is probably too high. But a quality small coffee table book. It is all floor plans a few photos and a short narrative of the building.

First, the only reason why I am giving this 4 stars is because of the horrible packaging from Amazon. They sent it in a huge box with very little protection, so most of the corners and the jacket were damaged.

Other than that, the book is fantastic, at least I think so. A lot of really great photos and architecture plans that fill an entire page. I like the layout of the book, it seems to follow FLW through his career, from start to finish, at least the buildings that were actually constructed. Also, I am just a fan, I love architecture as a hobby, so I am not sure if everything he did is in this book, but it does have over 420+ of his works included, and I think that is amazing. It is a little pricey, but it does go on sale once in a while.

If you love Frank Lloyd Wright's work this is a must have book. Even though the floor plans are a bit small they are a wonderful study and show how his work evolved. If you would love to build a FLW style home this is a necessity to start your plans.

This is the finest compendium of all built Frank Lloyd Wright Buildings and is a top ten book for any Frank Lloyd Wright Enthusiast. This wonderful book documents all of standing buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright with excellent photographs, floor plans, and well written commentary. As a Frank Lloyd Wright homeowner and architect I enjoy looking up the less well known Wright buildings. The author, William Storer, is a highly respected Wright scholar. This book is highly recommended for its breadth, accuracy, and scholarship on the work of America's Greatest Architect.
