Part of an exhaustive three-volume monograph featuring all of Wright’s 1,100 designs, both realized and unrealized. This volume covers the postwar years and the “living architecture” period.

Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959) was one of the fathers of modern architecture; his work helped define the modern era, had a widespread cultural influence, and remains highly influential today, half a century after his demise. The mature work of his final years is the subject of this monograph, including all his designs from that period, even those never built. Based on unlimited access to the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives in Taliesin, Arizona, this penetrating study gives an unrivaled overview of Wright’s groundbreaking work and eventual ”starchitect” status—included are drawings he made for an unrealized house intended for Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller.

Together with two forthcoming companion titles, this monograph will cover Wright’s entire oeuvre, from his early Prairie Houses, through the Usonian concept home and “living architecture” buildings, to late projects like the Guggenheim Museum and his fantastic vision of the “living city.” Author Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer, who served as Wright’s apprentice during the 1950s, highlights the latest research and gives fresh insights into the work, providing new dates for many of the plans and houses. A wealth of personal photos also illustrates the working routine at Frank Lloyd Wright’s fellowship.

This volume starts in 1943, when Wright’s organic “living architecture” introduced ideas for the use of solar energy and curved open spaces. In addition to many private projects and the Guggenheim Museum, the period up to 1959 includes Wright’s astonishing plans for a new Baghdad; his only realized high-rise tower in Bartlesville, Oklahoma; the crystal figure of the Beth Sholom Synagogue in Pennsylvania; and plans for an endless row of houses with floor plans based on hexagons.

Review

“Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer is our era’s pre-eminent Wright specialist, having begun his career as Wright’s apprentice. Now archives director at Taliesin West, he has access to hundreds of thousands of documents, allowing this monograph to be a masterful summation of FLW’s long career. There is more than enough here to make this the ultimate compact work on a definitive character in architectural history.” ― Wallpaper*

"In one of the most comprehensive collections of his work, The Complete Frank Lloyd Wright (TASCHEN $200) covers the architecture genius from A to Z...this volume tells the story of both a life and a genre of expression." ―

First comments are about series, applicable to all three volumes: they are exactly what they claim to be, complete record of Wright's work with great photos and plans. Some have griped that many plans and drawings too small: it would be impossible to do unless you either made this a 20 volume series or make the books bigger... and they are HUGE already. We live in a golden age of architecture publishing: 30 years ago there were few books with color photographs of Wrights work, in fact one of about 8" x8" on his drawings and then various hard-to- obtain books by Japanese publisher GA. Now there are too many books too list. This Taschen series has unusual photos, never seen-before drawings and good summaries by Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer. Yeah, I can complain too about not having enough photos or some I don't like but it is easy enough to buy other Wright books to fill the gaps for bigger and more photos. As a Wright fan-atic, I am thrilled to have these books where one gets the entire span of his remarkable career, from renderings with horse and carriages to private atomic-powered helicopters. If you are not a Wright fan, there are far cheaper and smaller books that will be more than enough; if you are a Wright fan or into the history of architecture, all three volumes are worth having.
Volume 3 probably has the greatest flowering of his work, with that constant range from tiny little cottage (dog house in one case) to giant public architecture or even city planning. This includes his work that borders almost on fantasy (whether one likes it or not) such as Huntingon Hartford club in Hollywood Hills (a project that echoes one of his first romantic visions, for the Doheny Ranch project in volume 2) and plan for Bagdad, both with their wonderful color renderings, or the Mile High Tower, with the BurjAlKhalif began to make this not a fantasy idea anymore. In fact this volume has some of the best renderings because there were so many unbuilt projects and the pencil renderings seemed to become more and more colorful. So if you are only getting one volume and you like visionary projects combined with beautifully executed homes of all scales, this is the one to choose.

There have been many books on America's greatest architect. I have not seen any that are so carefully and sumptuously produced as this. Because it is trilingual, the texts are necessarily concise. I wonder though (even as a former teacher of architectural history who likes to gab about it) whether a lot of text is necessary. One can just submerge oneself in the work! The price is most advantageous, even though one should commit to buying the other two in the set when they come out. The only competition is a lavish Japanese set now selling for more than four thousand dollars.

Don't deny yourself the pleasure of this book!

I didn't mind the oversize shape of the book to terribly. Nor does using a magnifying glass to view the drawings bother me enough to bestow a negative review. These are compromises I'm willing to accept in order to have a complete overview of Wright's work. However, I could do without the tri-lingual text. I suspect that is/was a mandate of the publisher, but it does nothing for me but add needless pages and cost. And actually, I'd be more than happy with the extra pages (and cost) if they contained more or larger photos/drawings instead of the other languages.

Beautifully produced book! I love it. I like the fact that all pages are full colour. I was also happy to see projects that were never published before, all original drawings. Its a very big book, but it is worth the money. Its a bit difficult to handle and would need a large flat surface to store horizontally. My only issue was the drawing sizes, I wish they were bigger in order to read the details better; perhaps some fold out pages would have done it justice. I recommend it to serious Wright fans out there and it would be an excellent addition to any Frank Lloyd Wright book collection.

All three volumes are a necessary addition to any serious Wrightean's library. Why? Because they give you Wright's own drawings, not someone's photos. This is classic!

The book is just perfect. Every architect should have one.

My wife and I have made a hobby of studying Frank Lloyd Wright's residential architecture. We've visited Wright designed homes throughout the country and hope to build a Wright inspired Usonian-type retirement home. We have collected 20+ books depicting Wright's work to better inform ourselves of the proportions and details required to create "the look" we want to achieve. We purchased this volume and the companion volume Frank Lloyd Wright, Complete Works 1917-1942 because they contain Wright's original drawings (which are in and of themselves works of art) and because they are so comprehensive--including projects that were never built. The drawings are reproduced from Wright's original works so they are authentic. They are beautifully printed. The downside is that reproducing detailed images of large drawings requires spacious pages so the volumes are large and heavy. This makes them difficult to shelve and tiring to use. Even though the format is over-sized for a book, it is not large enough to reproduce Wright's original drawings without significant reduction so a magnifying glass is required to see finer details. (I suspect the finest lines in Wright's original work have been lost altogether.) Every public library should probably have this set and we will probably add Volume I to our collection when it is released. But we are pretty fanatical. For most home libraries it is probably overkill.

This is the third volume of the monumental monographic work on Frank Lloyd Wright published by Taschen. It focuses on the period of Wright's maturity and research for a new utopia: a "must have" for every architect and architecture historian.

5.0 out of 5 stars L'ouvrage de référence sur Frank Lloyd Wright
Reviewed in France on November 11, 2012
