I've read all the DI Frank Lyle books and enjoyed them a lot, and I fully intend to read each new one as it comes out. This is an excellent series. It's police procedural, something similar to The Bill, and the stories unfold mainly from the point of view of the police who are investigating them, but with occasional insets which give us a bit of extra info not yet known to Frank Lyle and his colleagues. I'm continually amazed by Juliet B. Madison's story telling skills – every story or full length book is so different in terms of plot. Personally, I'm very fond of short stories, particularly detective ones, and I've greatly enjoyed these. In them, as the author explains in her foreword, we learn more about Frank Lyle and about the things that are happening in his life, so these stories are an important addition to his story as we know it in the full length books. This reminds me of what Ruth Rendell said about her short stories, Means of Evil – that the events in the short stories should be taken as part of the whole oeuvre. For instance, we learn in the first story that DI Lyle is about to become a father again, and his daughter is born at the end of the story. It's always fun to find a character, or characters, growing throughout a series. Juliet B. Madison has handled both story lines and characters with great skill so far, and has grown in stature as a writer with each new book. This is a series you should get into straightway!

DI Frank Lyle’s Casebook Volume 2 is a collection of five novellas that take place at various stages throughout DI Lyle’s career: “Reluctant Witness,” “Dead of Winter,” “The Wasteland,” “Call of the Wild,” and “Sanctuary.”

More than just police procedurals dealing with murders, Ms. Madison also ventures into topics that are wholly applicable in today’s world: spousal abuse, marital rape, animal rights, and assisted suicide among others. As my first introduction to the world of DI Frank Lyle, it started slow for me – mostly because it took a bit for me to settle into the writing style, which is very different from my usual reads. Once I got further into the stories, though, I couldn’t put it down. The “matter-of-fact” writing style suits the characters and their stories perfectly. I also found the use of multiple POVs and the “Interludes” a fantastic way to meet the other characters, including those involved in the crime in some way or other situations outside of the police work. Madison also thoughtfully preceded each novella with information concerning where the story fits in the overall canon, without which a newbie like me could have been lost.

Despite the slow start, I ended as a fan of DI Lyle’s and look forward to delving further into the extensive world Madison has created.

***I received a complimentary copy of DI Frank Lyle’s Casebook Vol. 2 in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second collection of short stories featuring DI Frank Lyle. The stories explore different stages of his personal life and career, and also offer insight into the other characters in the series. This book is gritty, honest, and sometimes brutal. These well-researched police procedural thrillers are penned with honesty and sensitivity as the author explores adult themes such as self harm, domestic abuse, obsession, and forbidden love; as such, this collection of short stories is for mature readers only. While it isn't strictly necessary to have read the previous books in the series, some familiarity with the other books might be helpful as some of the stories in this collection touch on previous cases in Lyle's career. As a fan of the series, I enjoyed revisiting some characters from Lyle's past and reading about his new adventures.

An especially good read if you have read the first three volumes in the D. I. Frank Lyle mystery series. because it concerns the folks we already know, old friends, so to speak, working on new cases. Great police procedural mystery series, with the characters changing and growing,... just like real life. But don't get me wrong, it is a stand alone book and you will be mightily pleased with it even if it is your first introduction to D.I. Lyle.
