Santa's workshop is a busy place, with a contemporary feel, including Fitness and Nutrition Elves and of course a weather center and Meteorology Elf, a nod to MJ's daytime job.
While the title could lead one to think this is a kids book it is a fun read for children of all ages. The language is adult and contemporary and the choice of descriptions very often amuses. The monster has vocabulary skills and a very funny joke is at the end if you are clever and catch it.
The illustrations are a wonderful addition and include a nod to the Pacific Northwest, where the illustrator designed sets for Pacific Northwest Ballet's new production of the Nutcracker, and MJ resides. I could see this book being scripted into a stage production with Jan Harvey-Smith doing sets and costumes.
MJ McDermott shows her versatility in this book, so very different from her first book "The Improv", an adult novel reflecting her time spent as a theatre major, also very well written.
I am giving Frankenstein Meets Santa as gifts, passing along this this wonderful tale for the holiday season. Can't wait to see what MJ comes up with next!
We are all different, we are all human beings and we must treat each other with kindness and respect. Now, more than ever.
Honestly because of all the things I personally am going through I haven't been feeling the Christmas Spirit until I read this book. It reminded me of the things we all already know but seem to keep forgetting.
I know M.J. from watching her on Q13 as a Meteorologist but never expected this. This book is so creative, inspiring, and not only teaches us but reminds us who we all are and how we all should be.
Thanks M.J. for reminding me who I am.
