I'm shamefully ten years late to this party, but I thoroughly enjoyed this twisted wwII found footage house of horrors.
I recently had a random thought about an old zombie trailer for a film that was never to be made, with FA director Raaphorst's name attached to it, titled "Worst Case Scenario." The trailer has stuck to my ribs all these years since seeing it when it hit the internet way back when.
So the other day I decided to look it up and see if it was still online, and ofcourse it still is, but one of the links I followed brought me to Raaphorst's Frankenstein's Army lol.
I can remember walking by this title in my local big-box stores and thinking it was a silly title for a piece of cheap run of the mill zombie junk made by some jackhole who couldn't care less about the sub-genre of Zombie films etc.. so just brushed it off smh. I've made that mistake so many times in the past, but I never seem to learn lol.
Well Fast forward to last night when I finally watched it, and yup! loved it ;)
One of the creepy aspects of the old "Worst Case Scenario" trailer I had searched for was the Nazi cyborg zombies dropping from the sky and walking out of the ocean. I had no idea that Raaphorst salvaged many of the visual concepts of the zombies from that trailer, and used them in abundance in Frankenstein's Army.
If I wasn't so turned off by the title, and just picked the bluray up off the shelf almost 10 years agao now, I would've seen all the cyborg zombies on the front damn cover and I would've known it existed, and had been 10 years into re-watches lol. Better late than never tho ;)
Anyway, if you love independent horror, you'll enjoy this one. It's the next day, and I'm still thinking about it. Those are the kind of movies I love. Those are the type of movies that remain in my collection permanently for multi-viewing purposes. Imo it's a five star independent fun horror show ;)

Frankenstein's Army is a pretty cool horror flick overall. Nice production design, nice interior sets, terrific monster creatures and a fantastic mad doctor fleshed out by Czech actor Karel Roden.
Two minor complaints however in my opinion.
On the one hand, a first-person found footage concept may be ok as it can make everything looks more realistic BUT, I don't think it works just fine for a movie set during the days of WWII. At some point during the movie I started wondering myself about whether it would have been really possible to shoot 84 minutes of film the way these soldiers do back in 1945. I know this is just a horror flick but...
On the other, these hideous creatures jump right onto the camera with no fatal consequences a bit too often and it just seems like they are somewhat sloppy, slow-paced or not really dangerous.
Of course they eventually manage to either kill or aprehend almost the entire Soviet platoon but some just look like very outlandish punk-horror experiments instead of efficient killing machines. What's more, they are mainly armed with hardware and not firearms. Some mounted machine guns or flamethrowers wouldn't have gone amiss.
In any case they are quite OK.
All in all, the movie does contain some very nice production values, as I mentioned before and it surely deserves a place on any horror movie collector's shelf.
Overall rating: 7/10
