Review

I did it! I did it! I solved the case. Well not the whole case, just who was the chocolatier on the ship. This is the fourth book in the Frankie Dupont series and having read all four this was the first time I knew the answer before it was revealed in the book.

In Frankie Dupont and the High Seas Heist, the crime has not even been committed. Frankie and his growing team of helpers (and us as readers) try to solve the mystery before it happens. This creates excitement in the plot as we wonder how Frankie will solve the case this time, and whether we will beat him to it.
For those who haven't read previous Frankie Dupont books or my educational reviews I will briefly sum up why I enjoy these books.

The characters are great role models, they are not disrespectful to adults, there is no bullying and the language is age appropriate.

The mysteries are well written. They give students a great understanding of how to write a mystery. They provide perfect structure and timing to students, to model in their own writing.

The language is easy to read. I admire Julie Anne Grasso's writing, each word seems to be perfectly chosen for each situation. I have always enjoyed the author's choice of character names. Students are exposed to new words and there is a nice amount of humour and play on words to keep the reader amused.

The crime. Each crime is different which gives Frankie a chance to use a different set of crime solving techniques to find the culprit from the range of suspects.

The illustrations capture the different scenes in the book. You can return to these detailed illustrations to find something new each time.

Frankie's all at sea this time. He has gone on an Antarctic Cruise with his father, his dog, and his two sidekicks Kat & Amy, on a mission to find a thief and stop a theft before it happens. This time Frankie is working alongside both his father and Inspector Cluesome, who up to now has felt more like a nemesis or at least an arch-rival, than a colleague. Maybe Cluesome warmed to Frankie after his success as the Science Fair.

It wasn't until they took off from Tasmania that I remembered that Frankie lives in Australia. That helps make the cruise a little more plausible, but the whole thing still feels maybe a little too far from realism, or maybe Antarctica feels that accessible from Australia (a cruise to Antarctica to reveal a new chocolate does feel a little absurd; maybe it's supposed to). The mystery is still good, though the denouement was visible from fairly far off, and this time Frankie is maybe a bit too dependent on his gadgetry rather than his brains. For that reason, this one is 4 stars, and might really be more like 3.5.

I can recommend the Frankie Dupont books to any child who likes mystery. I would say it's for fans of the Hardy Boys and Encyclopedia Brown, but these books probably come before those in terms of reading level. The publisher lists the age range as 8-12; I would probably say the audience tends to the lower end of that span.

This review first appeared on my blog Christy's Cozy Corners.

Frankie Dupont and the High Seas Heist is the fourth book in the Frankie Dupont series. This one has Frankie, his dad, Amy, and Kat on a cruise ship headed to Antarctica to help solve the mystery of who wants to steal a secret chocolate recipe.

This is such a cute series! I really liked this one since they got to be on a cruise ship. They weren’t stuck in little rooms either. These kids got the luxury treatment! Poor Frankie doesn’t find his sea legs for a few days, but once he starts feeling better, he can think clearly enough to solve the case!

This is definitely a series your kids will enjoy reading. The characters are fun, and your kids will love reading about how Frankie solves the mysteries.

Frankie Dupont is at it again. This time he will solve a mystery on the High Seas with his friends and trusty dog. Mr. Dupont is called to a case about a chocolate thief. He and Frankie along with his friends travel to get on a boat where the mystery must be solved. While Mr. Dupont is on the case of the chocolate thief Frankie stumbles onto another case that is somehow linked to one another. Maddie who will certainly surprise you in the end is looking for her missing mother and she thinks she is on the boat and may even be the thief. Frankie takes the case and with the help of his friends go to find clues and then proof.
I liked this story. Frankie is always so eager and a downright good kid. He makes the story so great and each turn of the page you get a little more mystery or surprise. All in all another good mystery.

Fun cruise theme with a double mystery and heartwarming ending. DNA not D and A and many other such word play phrases will engage readers. Perfect for tweens as it is a clever story and the storyline and discussions are all age appropriate. This book was written with figurative language students could find and discuss in class. This book would be nice in gifted ed programs as there are clues, twists, and turns to notice and figure out.

Readers’ Comments
‘This book was excellent. I liked the setting on the ship and the plot was exciting.’ Boy, aged 11
‘The best part was how much happens in the story. There’s never a boring bit. I’m going to read another of them.’ Girl, aged 10
‘I liked that there was lots of talking and not too much description. I find description sort of boring. But this was interesting all the way to the end. I particularly liked the mystery in the story and trying to work out who did what. Mystery is my favourite type of story’ Girl, aged 12
‘Seven of the children in my class read this book and they seemed to enjoy it. When we discussed the story they were positive about the plot and the characters. They thought the blurb was exciting but the illustrations on the cover were too simple. All of the children understood the story and I get the feeling the writing style was very much enjoyed.’ Primary teacher, aged 31

‘An exciting mystery adventure. A finalist and highly recommended.’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards
