Product Description

Package Quantity: 1

Frankincense is tapped from the very scraggly but hardy Boswellia tree by scraping the bark and allowing the exuded resins to bleed out and harden. These hardened resins are called tears. There are numerous species and varieties of frankincense trees, each producing a slightly different type of resin.

Just got this and it felt light. I weighted the bag of incense on a digital scale that is very accurate and with the bag included the entire thing weighs 13.97 ounces - not the 1lb or 16 ounces that is advertised. They are basically ripping people off by bagging them light in a crappy zip lock bag and figuring that nobody is going to weigh the package when it arrives. I HIGHLY suggest you set it on a scale when it arrives. I'm returning the package on principle. I don't like people who rip people off. It's pretty easy to weigh your product before you send it and if you're light by over 2 ounces, that's not a mistake in my opinion. That's a scam.

First off, I will address some concerns I've seen in reviews prior to my own purchasing of this product. I saw quite a few people complaining about a burning plastic smell. I didn't notice it at first because I was constantly using big chunks, as I typically tend to burn this incense outside, so that it will repel bugs. And yes, it works fast. I never have flies biting me or mosquitoes when I have this burning. It does have a very strong citronella-like odor to it, so you can expect this fragrance to be on the citrus-side. Generally, frankincense is burned with something else, such as myrrh. I noticed, though, I only got bad plastic odor if I did one of three things. One was I burned too many small pieces at one time... The smaller pieces melt really fast and so it produces a lot of smoke and the coal can't handle the quick rush of oil. The smoke WILL choke you out of your home and set off fire alarms if you arent cautious. The other times seemed to be if I used a whole coal. I usually break my round charcoals into quarters because a burner doesn't require a lot of heat. Really hot coals tend to do the same thing - melt the resin to oil too fast. Test it out until you find your desired effect. Start small. People seemed to gripe a little about quality... I dont know... I havent even finished my bag and I will be getting another tomorrow (as in, it is already ordered and will BE here tomorrow)! LoL. The third thing, again, has to do with heat. I noticed that early on, if I burned on top of the quarter coal inside my abalone shell on top of sand, in the beginning it smelled great... However, if I end up lighting another coal, and then another... I noticed that I started getting that gross odor and excessive smoke again.Read more ›

I'd read a few reviews about this product being subpar, but I bought it anyway based on the majority rule.

It smells awesome, though some pieces are a bit huge and need some smashing down. I love it! I took a photo of the granules, so you can inspect the quality/color.

Let me just address the "burning plastic" smell. Most of these reviews claim that the smell came toward the end. If you are burning incense with those cheap, self lighting charcoal tablets, that smell *Always* happens. It's not the resin, it's the chemicals in the charcoal (saltpeter, etc). I'm not saying that's for sure what it is, but it's my theory.

I even took a torch directly to the frankincense, no nasty smell. If you want to use charcoal, please use a nice bamboo/Japanese incense block. Those little discs are crap, toxic and they stink.

Will purchase again.

This appears to be the best frankincense available on Amazon, I tried searching the rest of the internet and it can be pretty tough to find. Smells very woodsy in the package, a lot like hickory, and becomes citrusy and very complex when burned over charcoal. A small chunk produces copious amounts of clean white smoke for about ten minutes.

This is the real deal and at an awesome price. I've ordered several of the frankincense products that Amazon lists and this is the first one that is really frankincense in its proper form. The granules are smaller than the premium priced tears but that makes no real difference. Exactly the right bottom note with just a wee bit of the higher notes that hint at camphor or menthol and which seem to dominate the higher price stuff.

This is very good frankincense, I have used some better one many years ago from the Arabian Gulf, that smell stayed in my memory, that is the reason I gave 4 stars, other wise I would have given 5 stars.

I am not even sure that this is actually frankincense. $10 for a whole pound seemed too good to be true because $10 should get you about a heafty palmful of the real stuff. Also, real frankincense (the milky pieces, not clear) becomes soft and chewable when you boil it. My co-worker got me into the stuff when I lived abroad because chewing it can settle an upset stomach (when you don't have access to pepto!).This stuff is too waxy when it should be a little like chewing a partially melted cough drop- waxy, but also sticky and very chewy.

Furthermore, the scent is quite bad. Fake, burnt, plastic-like. Another reviewer said that it is because people use charcoal discs and that is simply not true. In Oman and Egypt, charcoal discs are used and I have never had a problem with burning it on charcoal- that's how it's done in modern times! Not all discs are created equal and if you get a disc that burns too hot- your frankincense will just blacken and burn without actually boiling- but discs are used. And to be fair, I tried placing some pieces of this on some leftover embers in my fireplace (so no charcoal) and the scent is the same- mostly smokey with a mild hint of burnt plastic and actual frankincense.

If you want quality frankincense- this is not it. If you want to cheaply test out resin incense, you do get a lot for your money.
