This night was centered on Aretha, who was in great vocal form, but includes some “guests” who performed while she was changing costumes. Of the 12 full performances, Philly’s own Jill Scott sang two solo and Mary J. Blige gets one solo and a duet with Aretha (for Do Right Woman”. Kid Rock and members of The Backstreet Boys show up for other collaborations. Franklin runs the gamut from her hits to a great cover of Otis Redding’s “I Can’t Turn You Loose” (the opener) And – for her version of the aria “Nessun Dorma” (which she debuted on the Grammy Awards) she gets the audience (full of A-list celebrities) to sing along. Every one of the 12 performances got its own standing ovation.
This was obviously not the full concert because we see Stevie Wonder and a few others in the finale (“Freeway of Love”), but there’s plenty of soul here.
Because it was 2001, the screen aspect ratio is 4:3. The image is sharp and the sound good. I was annoyed by the camera work as the camera angle cuts were really fast. But this is just my own taste.
The combo pack includes the DVD and the CD of the same performances, with the exception of the Finale” which is only on the DVD.
If you are a fan of any (or all) of the three “Divas” here, you’ll certainly enjoy this package. I did!
I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.
