I bought this set for Christmas 2011. It looked cheap upon taking out of the box. I should have returned it then because it didn't have the hammer that was supposed to be included, but I needed it for the under-the-tree stuff. I waited until spring to set it up and play. Holy bowel-movement--awful. The wood is too light and has no 'feel' to it when you grip it. The wickets are far too flimsy, the paint is third-rate, and to cap it all off, the carrying case/bag--whatever they want to call it--is too small to fit the mallets once you assemble them. After one day, the white caps on the mallets are already looking like they're a season old. You should pass on this item, and probably anything else this company makes. I'll recap: NO HAMMER, FLIMSY WICKETS, LIGHT WEIGHT WOOD, BAD PAINT JOB, CHEAP PLASTIC, AND A CARRYING CASE TOO SMALL TO FIT ASSEMBLED MALLETS. I am so disappointed in this, I can't believe it. I would rate it with zero stars, but they won't let me do that.

I don't know what it is about croquet sets - you can either get "very cheaply made" or "absurdly expensive". I think most of us have probably grown up with the former and have no need for the latter.

This is an OK set. We've had it for 4-5 years now and play a handful of times every summer. The wood is very light but that's pretty standard. The end caps of the mallets have held up fairly well with only a couple starting to tear. One of the mallet handles broke out of the head - there are these cheap plastic pieces attached to the handles with screw threads on them, rather than the threads being in the actual wood. So the little plastic piece broke and the handle then could not screw into the head. I used this as an opportunity to reinforce all of the mallets as this plastic piece was bound to fail on all of them eventually. So I drilled some pilot holes and put a screw through the bottom of each mallet head into the handle, and glued each one with Stick Ass Glue. Now they're all completely secure.

Anyway, the balls are fine - standard plastic croquet balls that can take a beating. The wickets are exactly the same as every other set I've ever had - white painted wire.

So this isn't bad, but the quality isn't exactly inspiring. It's lasted better than I thought it would. THis is probably comparable to every set in this general price range.

I like the vintage styling of this set. The stripped balls (rather than many of the solid balls I saw in many sets) are easier to see on the lawn. The mallets are a little difficult at first to thread when putting together. It is handy to have the directions for game play right on the carrying case. All in all, it is an attractive set for a good price.

Not a bad item for the price. I would suggest to put some clear shellac on the threads and tighten ! Won't work loose that way and will make the joint a little more solid, But remember, you can't un-screw them either.

Had a handle break after 2nd use. Face of mallets are cracked after first game. One mallet handle warped before starting 2nd game. Mallet was being stored in rack that came with my set. Balls seem to heavy for mallets, not sure what the standard weight is supposed to be.

This set is pretty well made and is attractive, but we've only used it once and it looks like the wooden threads in the mallets and the mallets themselves may not hold up well over the long haul. The biggest problem though is that the mallets are not heavy enough for the weight of the balls. You have to smack these balls really hard to get them to move much which takes away the challenge of really having to aim well. Just lighter on the balls for this set and a little longer on the storage bag so mallets could be left intact and all would be well.

The thread on the handle and/or the thread inside the club head of one club was so poorly manufactured that it's impossible to assemble a usable club of the components. The others are all ok, but not super confidence inspiring. Also, the carrying case is so small that it won't hold more than four of the clubs assembled and all the other parts of the set.

family enjoys playing croquet. Only issue we have is one of the balls was caked in mud/dirt. All other components were new. Wanted to send it back, but the children wanted to play. Wont buy from this company again.
