Local author and attorney Scott A. Lerner is back on the bookshelves with his third book, "The Fraternity of the Soul Eater: A Samuel Roberts Thriller." In this entertaining tale full of mystery, intrigue and Egyptian lore, attorney Sam Roberts finds himself in the middle of a case where an 18-year-old fraternity pledge claims he saw a girl being sacrificed at the group's initiation ceremony. Only no one believes him due to the amount of alcohol he had consumed that night.
This isn't Sam's first brush with the supernatural. In the first two books of the series, "Cocaine Zombies" and "Ruler of Demons," Sam investigates and eventually fights for his life, and possibly sanity, against evil beings walking the earth.
At the start of the third book, he wonders if he and his friend Bob are "humanity's only hope against ancient supernatural forces combined with modern genetic engineering." He questions why he can't be happy with his law practice in Champaign-Urbana and his hot girlfriend, who loves him and wants him to stop the madness.
But in this fraternity case, Sam continues to discover more information about the evil doings of this super secret brotherhood, and he feels he has a moral obligation to stop these men from bringing Egyptian gods to life in order to have more power.
Not only is this an interesting plot full of twists and turns, but Lerner's characters, Sam and Bob, are witty and endearing. The book is not just plot-heavy, as many genre books can be. This supernatural thriller is full of characterization, which is perfect for fans of the series who already love Sam Roberts and also for new readers who will like him immediately and want to go back and read the first two installments.
The book is set in Champaign-Urbana, and there are many local references, especially to University of Illinois buildings, street names, restaurants and publications, such as The Daily Illini. Reading a book set in a familiar place is often an extra bonus to an already great story.
When discussing his book, Lerner said, "Modern fraternities grew out of secret societies. Although I have never belonged to a fraternity, I felt that the mysteries, traditions and secrets associated with that system offered an ideal premise for this book." He also went on to say that he believes freshmen at any university can read "The Fraternity of the Soul Eater," which will help them get acclimated to college life. Then he added, "Particularly if human sacrifice is going on."
Lerner lives in Champaign with his wife, their two children and their cat, Fern. He is a graduate from the UI Law School and is a sole practitioner, focusing his law practice mostly on criminal and family law.
