A young Frank Frazetta, after having his first comics story published at 16, spent his time as an assistant at Fiction House, hoping to break into comics. Standard Comics was his real entry into the industry, but "only" doing cartoon illustrations for text stories, and then funny animal stories. Until he sat up all night learning anatomy out of a textbook, he wasn't considered ready to draw human characters.
What is so often overlooked about Frazetta is that his love of drawing nature was always an essential part of his work, from the outset. I've often said that he was surely the greatest background and scenery artist ever to draw comics, notably in his Dan Brand series for M.E. Comics. As he himself said in an interview, he was the paradox of a tough guy who loved to draw flowers. The text illustrations alone are like an advanced course in scenery drawing for cartoonists.
The introduction cleverly makes the point that this funny animal work was the material Frazetta considered to be his true self, and the way these stories and illustrations are presented really brings out the abundant talent and freshness of his work, mostly done while still in his teens. I no longer have to "collect" comics anymore, instead, I'm able to enjoy some of the best work by comic's greatest authors meticulously reprinted as they were originally with generous historical essays and ephemera.
The latest volume, Frazetta Funny Stuff, focuses on the funny animal and humor work of comic legend, Frank Frazetta. Reprinting 27 complete stories, the book is not only a testament to Frazetta's versatility, but also the magnitude of his talent. This is a collection to be savored and embraced.
My exposure to Frazetta's humor work was previously limited to several stories and reprints from the early nineties, but with this volume I've had the opportunity to enjoy this highly recommended output by a master cartoonist. This book is amazing and kudos to both Yoe Books and IDW for producing an flawless tome. Highly recommended.
