I listen to audio books to fall asleep by. What a mistake I made with this one. It had a little too much introduction but once it passed that point, I was hooked for the night. I kept thinking that I'd listen to "just one more" segment and then turn it off - NOT! I was like the guy in the bar who'se going to go home after one more beer.

The book is interesting, well written, appropox to today's headlines and a lot of fun too boot. Well worth your hard earned $$$. bg

This book basically addresses all of the bad information we as Americans are being led to believe from the internet and traditional marketing outlets. I was very surprised to learn that crime has actually gone down in America since 1996? The reason behind the drop is astonishing. When you take mega studies and properly analyze the results, a lot of personal beliefs are popped like balloons. If you believe in busting popular community myths and exaggerations, then this is the book for you. It is Great!

No theme, no logic thread, but some truly original takes on how the world works, from the standpoint of a "rogue economist." Some topics, like how Roe v. Wade is the strongest explanatory variable for America's decrease in crime, just keep coming up, but still, there are lots of common-sense-defying revelations that keep it interesting. For instance, did you know that time spent reading to children does not correlate to improved test scores, but that the number of books in the house does? Did you know that crack-dealing inner-city gangs are run much like corporate America -- except they offer a slightly higher risk of fatality? Whether or not you agree with the authors' conclusions, these, and a slew more of such revelations, make for an entertaining and thought-provoking read indeed.

The book is interesting and handle the most common "conventional wisdom", like; circumstances and attribute results based on superficial analysis; analyse the system as a whole and based on unreliable data inputs; moving the people by incentives, positive or negative; names given to lead to sucess; management of gangs as a business. Beyond of that, shows that the color of skin is not a factor that differenciate the mankind intellectual, but the racism. The parenting can contribute partially to the children growing intelectual. In general the book deals with a wide range of topics which is supposed to be economically associated, according to the author, it tells histories of some personal, and in phase with data argues and debates the themes. I consider this book very rational and it brings the need of data analysis in order to take decisions. The "conventional wisdom" is a good basis but it must be comproved or dismissed by reliable data and accurate analysis.
