Surprise hit with my kids!

I was looking for some games to go with the 3ds that I bought my kids for Christmas and thought this might be good for my four year old daughter. I was partly right, it is one of the few games she even notices. My five year old son though, plays this game almost as much as Lego Batman 2!

What he loves is building creatures. He probably does this more than exploring!

This is a VERY Japanese game! It feels far more Japanese than American but my kids don't care. You start by building a formee, which is what your creatures are called. You can create your creature by putting together body parts, heads, eyes, mouths, torsos, legs, arms, wings, even wheels and other oddities. Once you are happy with your formee, you name him and the game gives him a heart and brings him to life.

It automagically merges the parts together into a somewhat believable life form and assigns it abilities (like flying if it has wings) and such.

Then the player launches into the explore mode to play aside scrolling video game with his or her new creation. The planet starts off very small, but grows to include more areas and terrain (hills, city, oceans and more) as you create more formees. These areas can be explored in Mario-esque fashion complete with bricks that can be smashed for coins with the formees head.

Often the exploration will take the player on quests to find a key and open a treasure chest. The formee needs to eat regularly to keep up its strength. When it eats, it lays eggs which you crack at the end of the level to find coins inside, as I said it is a very Japanese feeling game. It is definitely quirky.

There are also dungeons with an unusual fighting technique, which is to say there is no technique. You have attack points and defense points and the game determines the outcome for you, there is no skill or technique involved. You press continue repeatedly until you either win the fight or lose it. Definitely the weakest aspect of the game.

Unfortunately, we have not experimented with multiplayer options yet, so I cannot comment on that aspect of the game yet. I will update as we learn more.

Overall, in spite of the oddness of this game, I really like that my kids spend as much time designing their for,ees as they spend exploring the game. I feel like it is a break from the same old, same old and inspires a little more creativity from them. I would recommend giving this one a try...
