Format: Audio CD
The cover of the late Fred Ho and the Afro Asian Music Ensemble's latest disc offers as good a description as any of what to expect from the music. Just as Malcolm X, Mumia Abdul Jamal, and Chairman Mao (not to mention Bruce Lee in silhouette) feature prominently on the cover, so the tracks on Big Red travel effortlessly through Korean music, free jazz, Ghanese Ewe song, and Archie Shepp-influenced vamps, offering an unaffected manifestation of musical globalization. The recording and engineering are fine and balanced, particularly in the lower registers, giving Ho, bassist Wes Brown, and drummer Royal Hartigan a chance to shine. Upon Fred Ho's untimely death in 2006, Ho had several finished recordings that were never released, which are now available from Innova Recordings giving listeners a chance to hear more from this jazz ambassador.

UPDATE:

As a correction to the review above, Fred Ho is not dead (!!!), but was reborn in 2006. From an article by Shaun Brady in "Jazz Times" in 2010: "The new Fred Ho was born on Aug. 4, 2006, when Ho was diagnosed with colon cancer. Over the next three years, he suffered through three tumors and seven surgeries, beating incredible odds to survive. "I'm supposed to have been dead," Ho says matter-of-factly, munching on grapes in the dining room of his Brooklyn apartment. "The first tumor, I was given two out of three chances of living. Not too bad. The second tumor, less than 50 percent. The third tumor, only one in 30,000 chances of living. So I've been gifted with continuing life and I don't want to squander it. I don't have professional goals anymore. That would be a very reductive application of this gift." See this article for further details:
