Making ice in this tray (or any of the trays by this company) is a skill on it's own. The trays are extremely flexible, and in order to fill in the tentacles you have to pour water all the way to the top. The only way you wouldn't spill water everywhere is if you have a ginormous freezer with a flat tray that's perfectly level and you pour the water in the tray while it's already in the freezer.
Ice cube extraction is annoying. Something is always stuck somewhere, whether it's the legs or the head or both. The first cube I extracted shot across the floor and broke into pieces. If you want these to pop out fully in shape, you have to stand there and slowly work them out. This is going to freeze your fingers and even then you have a 50% chance of them breaking.
I really wanted to like these because they look so cute in the pictures, and the molds are adorable. I also really like the idea of little shapes of ice, but after dealing with these, I'm not sure it's worth the effort.
This year I made smiley chocolates in these molds. They came out great! The eyes and smiling mouth were very clearly visible. I used a chopstick to poke the melted chocolate deep into the grooves, to make sure it reached everywhere with no bubbles.
I'd been using plastic candy molds in past years, but I was worried about so many plastics being toxic, so this year I switched to silicone because it may be safer. The big difference that I notice between these molds and my old plastic candy molds is that these are are much bigger. I made seven big smileys (maybe 2 inches in diameter) and nine Easter Island statues (from these: Fred & Friends Stone Cold Ice Trays) with the same amount of chocolate that I'd usually use to make a zillion little chocolates. My kids seemed content to have fewer big chocolates instead of more little ones.
These trays are a little floppy, so it was trickier to get them into the fridge than the stiff plastic trays I used to use -- I put these on a cookie sheet to move them, and that worked very nicely. These were easier to unmold than chocolates in plastic trays, because the silicone is very flexible.
Now that I've done chocolates, I want to try using these to make ice!
Don't expect to fill this up and then carry them to the freezer. The best way is to put it on a tray or plate and fill them up with a measuring cup while it's placed in the freezer. Don't move them.
The bulb headed octopus is a little hard to remove from the tray, but not enough to make it worth the while. Just run some warm water on the outside push on the head.
They float a little on their sides. Don't you think they should have come with 8 octopus per tray?....
We thought it would be cool to add a little blue food coloring in the center just after they iced over. Then when they melted, they would release the "ink" in your drink. Haven't tried it yet, but I will.

Super cute! They look great in your glass. The only 'con' is that sometimes the legs break off and it can be hard to pop them out of the mold. Read morePublished 2 days ago by Amber
