First of all, the style is perfect for me because I'm a fan of the movie Elf that has the unicorn/whale creature, Mr. Narwhal. I saw this and thought, "Ooh, what a unique addition to my collection!" When it arrived, I couldn't wait to brew a cup of tea using it.
So besides being cute, how does it work? Well, I think it works very well. I put some very finely ground tea into the infuser and set it into my mug of hot water. The infuser gripped the sides of the cup well - although if it were a mug with thicker sides, it may not have worked - and the water moved in and out as it should. I did find that the tea seeped much quicker if I moved the infuser around a bit rather than letting it just sit on the side of the mug. I also found that with the finely ground tea that it will fall through the holes of the infuser when it's moved around. That isn't something that bothers me, but I wanted to mention it here.
The Narwhal tea infuser is a really great buy for any tea fan - especially those who like Elf.
But alas, the end of the day I was seeking a good cup of strong tea, and there are several issues with this novelty item:
You have to fill it nearly to the BRIM of you're cup to properly submerge it to the top of the holes near his waist. Personally, I avoid filling a mug so full it would spill if I tried to hold it The main issue is in the design as the little paws hold onto it high up. The torse needs to be a little longer in my opinion, or something. I gave up and let my Sloth completely drown to make sure I was getting the most out of the infusing.
Unfortunately, even that never provided a remotely strong cup of tea. It just tasted like water. I am so sad. It is adorable, but not functional at all for the purpose I needed. Especially for spending $10 on it...thus, I processed the return.
Instead, I decided to be boring and ordered Schefs Premium Tea Infuser - Stainless Steel - Single Cup - Perfect Strainer for Loose Leaf Tea instead, WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT. I highly recommend it if you are a tea snob and want a good strong cup of tea. That one has holes everywhere, stores plenty of loose tea, securely clicks into place to close the lid, has a hook to put onto the edge of your cup, and fits perfect in a travel mug so you can steep and keep it hot before using. Most importantly, makes a delightful cup of tea. I began this search to make Mae from the bulk item Cruz De Malta 1/2 Kilo Yerba Mate (next time Ill get the full kilo, i ordered this smaller one by mistake... yes im that much of a mate addict).
It looks cute perched on top of a mug, but is kind of a hassle to use. The opening is too small for a teaspoon, so filling it tends to produce a bit of a mess. Dry tea leaves tend to cling to the "fur" ridges on the outside, as well. The infuser is supposed to rest on the top edge of the mug, but unless you practically overfill the mug, the water level doesn't come up high enough for the tea to properly steep.
The one positive of this infuser, other than its cuteness, is the all-silicone design. I like not having to worry about rusting if I leave it in the sink, ect, unlike most infusers that contain metal.
Overall, I'm pretty disappointed in this item. My fiance and I are avid tea drinkers, but this particular infuser gets skipped becuase it isn't worth the mess and hassle. I have a set of tea-bag-shaped silicone infusers that I much prefer.
Place tea bag in cup. Steep tea. Remove tea bag. Place sloth on cup. Enjoy tea while looking at sloth.
