Things begin to speed up and get pretty complicated once she's on her way. Another girl from her school, Hershey, was also accepted and although they have nothing in common, the girls end up as roommates. Rory learns that her mother went to the same school, but dropped out just before graduating and reappeared in her dad's life, convincing him to marry her. She also runs into a mysterious guy, North, whose arms are covered with tattoos at a coffeehouse in the town just off campus. Initially a bit put off by his appearance, it isn't long before she realizes there's considerable attraction between them.
Good thing there is, because there are strange goings on at school. After years of not hearing the inner voice referred to as The Doubt, Rory hears it in her first class, Plato Practicum, taught by a woman who seems to have it in for her. It isn't long before Rory realizes that what she believed about her mom wasn't entirely correct, but when she and North begin digging, she finds reports altered or erased. Her roommate's behavior becomes quite suspicious and Rory is invited to be considered for a super secret society that may have a long ago connection to her mom.Read more ›
This book was so good! It freaked me out, if we’re being completely honest. This Lux app can make any and every choice for you. It learns your habits, it learns your personality, it learns what’s good and not good for you. Ask it any question that you need help answering, it’ll do it for you. Not sure if your current boyfriend is right for you? No problem, Lux can compare your personality chart to theirs that is stored on this nationwide database and let you know the results. IT’S FREAKY. And if you don’t think so, we probably can’t be friends. And honestly, you’re one of the ones that has Rory worried about. There comes a point where you completely give up your life to Lux and your handheld and at that point, there is no return.
What was even more realistic and terrifying about this novel is that Lux is an app designed for the world’s most popular brand of phone, Gnosis. New phones are released every year that claim to be even better. There are press conferences to reveal what the new “it” gadget is going to look like, and everyone tunes in. Does this not sound exactly like Apple?! Lauren Miller, you win. (This is why I’m SO team android, people!Read more ›
I loved this book - every aspect of it. The dystopian future described in the story is eerily similar to our own - which makes it feel like it could really happen, which is even creepier (except for some of the cool technology). The characters were interesting and well rounded, especially Rory and North. Rory was a great main character who started out like everyone else - basically a sheep of society - but gradually broke apart and saw things for what they were. Her characters definitely matures and grows throughout the story and she shows great personality traits like intelligence, determination, and perseverance.Read more ›
