Blue (professional thief) and Mick (ex. CIA operative, current mercenary) met while working a job involving priceless statues that needed to be acquired and shipped cross country. Blue was doing the "acquiring" and Mick was providing him the necessary security to "acquire". The attraction was instant and intense and more than a little scary for 2 alpha male loners who don't do attachments. However running in the same circles led to flirtation building to a bet that involved Blue daring Mick to catch him in the act of "acquiring" (since he was THAT good that no one ever had) and Mick making "bed for the night" the forfeit. When Blue finally loses - he isn't all that upset to slip into Mick's bed and wait, and wait and wait and get really angry and leave because there was no Mick.
Then at some indeterminate future time they of course run into each other again and the games begin. Mick and Blue are both likable. engaging characters, they seem fairly developed for a short story (150 pages), they have great chemistry and the sex scenes are actually pretty hot (which is fairly surprising given the plot device used to get them into bed). Unfortunately as much as I love a HEA - it feels like they get pretty sappy, awfully quickly - but I understand they were working with the 150 page time line.
There were some plot points that had me scratching my head - like since when MS became a death sentence and why the developer of a new drug would want to physically and sexually assault and tick off one of his independent buyers/distributors (I'm just not clear on that business model). But at the end of the day - it's all about the relationship and the sex and - BONUS - something gets blown up!
Free Falling introduces Prophet - the lead character from the author's Hell or High Water series - and I'm definitely intrigued and looking forward to delving in.
Free Falling had likable characters, engaging dialogue
I loved the characters that were introduced in this story. Both Mick and Blue were interesting characters to get to know. I only wish I could have gotten to know them better though. I enjoyed their interactions, but felt that there was something missing in their story. From the start I was curious about them. They seemed like total opposites, but perfect for each other. When they started their interactions and during that time that Mick 'looked' out for Blue after getting hurt I was more than curious to see where the connection that was developing between them ended up. And just when I was settling down into their story, WHAM! they're already professing their love.
Where's the doubt? the hesitation? I wanted to see some more emotions from them. I wanted them to struggle, especially Blue. For such an independent, strong man he gave in to easily in my opinion. Mick at least resisted and that made for some interesting reading. His struggle with his feelings towards Blue and whether or not to reveal his secrets kept me intrigued as to how it would all play out, so I was disappointed when it resolved itself so easily.
Other than the 'insta-love' aspect of the story, I found the story to be well-written and enjoyable. The sex was phenomenal, the characters were alpha-male delicious and the fast-paced action scenes entertaining. I enjoyed the action-adventure part of the story, especially seeing Blue, Mick and Prophet in action.
I read this story because my friend Lisa advised it on her review of Catch a Ghost, the first book in the Hell or High Water series by S.E. Jakes. I'm glad I followed her advice. In this story I got to know more about the Extreme Escapes organization and its members, which helped a great deal when I set out to read Catch a Ghost later on.
All in all, a great introduction to the Hell or High Water universe for someone who plans to follow up on the series.
Spoiler: some BDSM -tie up, violence, bad language, date/sex drug results.
