By N. J. Richards
In the interest of full disclosure, I have known N.J. Richards for over 20 years. With that said, this book (which is the first in a series of books) is chock full of great common sense principals to groom your child for scholarships. Moreover, and most importantly not that scholarships ARE MOST important, she also gives valuable life lessons that have shaped her children to be lovely people who I know will go far in life.
When you meet N.J. Richards, you meet a lovely human being who for as long as I have known her has always put her children first, so what you are reading in her book is the truth. If you have to look at books to find guidance on how to navigate finding ways to pay for college and level the playing field, so that your child WILL be a success in life, this is the book.
In this first book she shows you how to make sure YOUR child has the competitive edge so when they are college ready, they are REALLY ready academically and financially to win scholarships.
I was especially impressed with the chapter, Components of the Competitive Student Profile, which shows parents how to prepare their child for college entrance exams and the importance of community service. Richards also covers another important aspect of a college and scholarship applicant, social media, and how it can, as she states “diminish their character” with the wrong post or language. The chapter, Getting and Staying Ahead of the Game, provides a list of books that all should add to your library.
This series of books, Free Ride to College: a Guide to Grooming Your Kids for a Full Academic Scholarship is important! They will assist you in guiding your child to access resources, and help them become a stand out in a world where “free” money for college is very difficult to come by. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
I recommend this book to everyone who has a child or knows a child who wants to attend college.
