Product description
Don't feel bad-we never knew we needed an insulated double wall capacitor stainless steel water bottle, either. That epiphany came after a moab trail run when we got back to the car, windows rolled up tight in the blazing late-august sun. Reaching through the 150-degree blast furnace, we grabbed the free flow ss off a leather seat so hot it could fry an egg, and took a sip of water so crisp and cool, it seemed like a miracle. The free flow's rapid-pour, leak-proof AUTOSEAL locking lid with its easy-to-clean drop down lid feature fits all sizes of our capacitor stainless steel bodies. Features aside, it's the powder coated, dishwasher-safe double wall design keeping your water cool and drinkable all year round that will change the way you think about hydration.

Edit...... Ok, after using the bottle at my desk I've found that the insulation on the Avex isn't anywhere near as good as the hydro flask bottles. The bottle is cold to the touch after filling it with mostly ice and a little bit of water. The Ice melts pretty quickly in my 70 degree office. I still really like the bottle because of the cap but the vacuum seal leaves a bit to be desired. Ok as a an office waterbottle but I don't think it would perform very well in true heat.
Anyway... the 24oz ones are manageable. They're fine. And the 40oz really isn't all that much bigger. It's a tad bit bigger around - won't fit into a cup holder in the car - but is only an inch or two taller than the 24oz ones. I won't even bother reviewing the lids, because they're (practically) perfect. "How big is it" was the only thing I really wanted to know that wasn't in another review yet. So... here you go ;)
The only negative - "blue" for the 24oz and "deep blue" for the 40oz are - as you can see - the same. So... if you want different colors, don't get blue and deep blue. With that ~2 inch difference in height (and not-really-visible difference in width), from across the room, you won't know which one it is. Which can be disappointing - or dangerous if you think you're grabbing something cold and pickup something hot without really thinking about it.
The 40oz is for water... the 24oz is for coffee. Mixing the up isn't all that great. Hence the Ice 24oz purchase (and giving my roommate the blue 24oz).
Why did I get these? I have a Pete's branded Contigo coffee mug and LOVE the auto-seal lid. However that got left in my car by one of my friends (who I'm sure wants it back...), and never had a weird taste to it. The new ones will for about a week, then the weird taste goes away (trust me, it's not just me getting used to it. That's not a "me" thing to do). The 24oz seems to have it a little worse, but I'm sure it's just that there's less liquid being affected. I haven't had the guts to throw them in the dish washer yet, but that will probably solve this minor problem immediately. I'm also really sensitive to this kind of thing - and that's why I got the stainless bottles instead of the plastic ones (well, for the water, anyway), so this may not even be an issue for you.
Usage notes; when drinking, it's better to let go of the button, then take your mouth off the bottle. Doing it at the same time works, but is just a little messy. This is different than the "coffee mug" lid on the contigo that has a bit of a lip that holds the extra liquid. Since this one sticks out, the extra stuff runs down it. If I hadn't had the contigo first, I'd probably have adopted this behavior immediately. It's not really a thing - we're talking about a few drops that run down the mouthpiece, and on the water bottle, it's not a big deal at all, but for the coffee - it just makes it look messy. It's never made a mess (other than when trying to show off how easy it is, holding it above my head and pulling the trigger - and missing my mouth), but doesn't look good if you have something that contrasts with the black plastic, even if it is just a couple drops.

It seems like I am liking avex more and more now, contigo could really improve on their design. The handle on this bottle comes in handy and the lock button works better than the contigo ones.
It is also easy to clean, you can open the top cap and clean where the opening is!

With that being said, its a very good bottle. It certainly doesn't leak and defintely keeps your drinks hot and cold for a very long time but I think the 12 hours hot and 34 hours cold are a little optimistic. Certainly for the hot anyway. Its a long time to keep drinks hot, but I found after 9 hours it was at a temperature I didn't want to drink.
The leak proof works great. Unlike other designs there definitely isn't a possibility of anything being pressed. It would be difficult to/ for anything to press the release button anyway. But the metal 'pin' that locks it definitely makes sure of it. I can put it in a rucksack and be confident it won't leak. Which is more important than its overall hot/ cold times.
I realise the hot/ cold times are a long time, but I've downgraded one star due to it not being anywhere near.
The feature I like the most is the lid. The lid has a lock, which is good as I have had a couple of lucky escapes with the other lids. Nearly lost a laptop in my work bag a couple of times. The lid is also easy to clean as it opens out, where the old lids were difficult to clean. The only thing the lid lacks is a clip to attach it to a bag.
I use it at work and I like the fact that it has a soft rubber pad at the bottom so it doesn't make an annoying noise every time you put it down on your desk
If you use something daily you are bound to catch some nicks and scratches from bumps here and there, but so far the paint quality on this seems to be holding up really good
