Editorial Reviews
Freedom Child sees the band presenting a collection of urgent, timely, future-facing anthems that speak of both real-life events and real-time sonic adventurism. The album was recorded between London and Los Angeles and for the first time, the band chose to work with an A List of co-writers and producers. The Script are one of the worlds most successful bands and have sold over 29 million records. The Irish three-piece have scored x3 multi-platinum albums, all of which were #1 in the UK. The Script are also one of the biggest live bands, having sold over 1.4 million tickets across 203 headline shows and they sold out the legendary Croke Park stadium in their hometown in a matter of minutes.

The Script has really come into their own with this album. They've definitely hit their stride. However, they're also taking just a few too many musical cues from Maroon 5. In fact, this album has lost a little too much of The Script's uniqueness and spirit and now sounds just a little too much like Maroon 5 (or pretty much any generic pop band). I should qualify that statement about Maroon 5. They sound a bit too much like Maroon 5 circa "Overexposed" and "V". Even Maroon 5 has fallen into the trap of not sounding line Maroon 5 recently. As for The Script, I liked the sound on "#3" and "No Sound Without Silence". Though, between "#3" and NSWS, I could tell The Script was heading in the direction of "Freedom Child".
It's not that this album is not listenable. It is, very much so. It just isn't very representative of what I would expect The Script to sound like at this stage. They've proven they can write great songs. Now, instead of heading down the generic pop route, I'd rather see them take some risks and try to do something that isn't quite so generic. I want to hear solid bands like this take chances and produce unique stuff. The Beatles back in their heydey never rested on their songwriting laurels. They always strove to make an album that was unique and didn't sound like their previous. Yes, they still sound like The Beatles at the core, but the albums are unique in and of themselves. I want to hear The Script challenge themselves to take some risks and make something more exciting than taking their well written songs and wrapping them in a generic pop bow.
As for the mixing, it could do with a tad bit of help here and there. Note, these qualms are minor. Some samples seemed to have clicking noises (Arms Open intro), were cut short or the samples just didn't properly fade. If samples are intended to end abruptly, then it should sound intentional, otherwise the mixing seems amateur. You may hear this in headphones more than via speakers.
Overall, I love the album for generic pop sound that is, but I also expected to hear The Script take more risks like they did with "#3" and bring out their own unique "The Script" sound rather than trying to sound like Maroon 5.

That said, there are good tunes on Freedom Child, my personal favourites being the brilliant summer-sounding Rain, ballad Arms Open, the soaring title track and opener No Man is an Island. I'll still be playing these on repeat and I'm sure the album will be a big hit but I think this will be based largely on their past reputation. Given that I prefer their even-numbered albums, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that album number six sees a return to their much-loved and tried and tested sound.
