About the Author

Daniel C. Dennett, the author of Freedom Evolves (Viking) and Darwin's Dangerous Idea, is University Professor and Austin B. Fletcher Professor of Philosophy, and Director of the Center for Cognitive Studies at Tufts University. He lives with his wife in North Andover, Massachusetts, and has a daughter, a son, and a grandson. He was born in Boston in 1942, the son of a historian by the same name, and received his BA in philosophy from Harvard in 1963. He then went to Oxford to work with Gilbert Ryle, under whose supervision he completed his D.Phil. in philosophy in 1965. He taught at U.C. Irvine from 1965 to 1971, when he moved to Tufts, where he has taught ever since, aside from periods visiting at Harvard, Pittsburgh, Oxford, and the Ecole Normal Superieure in Paris. His first book, Content and Consciousness, published in 1969, followed by Brainstorms (1978), Elbow Room (1984), The Intentional Stance (1987), Consciousness Explained (1991), Darwin's Dangerous Idea (1995), and Kinds of Minds (1996). He coedited The Mind's I with Douglas Hofstadter in 1981. He is the author of more than a hundred scholarly articles on various aspects on the mind, published in journals ranging from Artificial Intelligence and Behavioral and Brain Sciences to Poetics Today and the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism. His most recent book is Brainchildren: A Collection of Essays 1984–1996 (MIT Press and Penguin, 1998).He gave the John Locke Lectures at Oxford in 1983, the Gavin David Young Lectures at Adelaide, Australia, in 1985, and the Tanner Lecture at Michigan in 1986, among many others. He has received two Guggenheim Fellowships, a Fulbright Fellowship, and a Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Studies in Behavioral Science. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1987.

Cogent, compelling presentation of complex ideas

I used to be very firmly in the "free will is an illusion" camp, because I accepted the idea that "free will" could not exist if one could not be "free" of the chain of causation in a deterministic universe. This book lays out compelling arguments that varieties of free will 'worth wanting' can exist within deterministic universes (essentially because we can still be agents with individual identities and interests) and that the hypothetical variety of 'free will' that is totally untethered from the great chain of causation is neither desirable nor coherent (the injection of uncaused randomness as a source of "freedom" in a partially deterministic universe just tethers your choices to a cosmic dice roll instead of relevant prior causes).

I was persuaded by the book, and I also thoroughly enjoyed it.

Daniel Dennett has been a favorite author for years. He has given me a great deal to think about. Usually he was a bit over my head, but still thought provoking. This time though he lost me. I gave up. Before writing this I went back and tried unsuccessfully to follow the text.

Indeterminism isn't ? ? ?

All I can say is "Wow." I admit to struggling with this excellent book for much of the first half, then, after digesting as much as I could, the last half was a bit easier. Dennett does his usual outstanding job of defining and carefully leading us through the many different arguments around his controversial topic of Free Will. Having read both Consciousness Explained and Darwin's Dangerous Ideas, I was really looking forward to this book as well. Little did I know that it would so challenge my focus and ingrained ideas about determinism and free will.
Dennett shows that determinism does not imply inevitability. As if that isn't enough to struggle with, he then goes on to show that indeterminism doesn't give us free will as most people argue it does. And then, to add insult to injury, Dennett shows clearly how there are real options in a deterministic world. Free will becomes "real, but it is not a preexisting feature of our existence, like the law of gravity. It is also not what tradition declares it to be: a God-like power to exempt oneself from the causal fabric of the physical world. It is an evolved creation of human activity and beliefs, and it is just as real as such other human creations as music and money. And even more valuable."
Since I speak and lecture on Ethics as a Process, I was most interested in Dennett's view on ethics. He gave me much to think about as he states that: "I have not sought to replace the voluminous work in ethics with some Darwinian alternative, but rather to place that work on the foundation it deserves: a realistic, naturalistic, potentially unified vision of our place in nature."
No doubt I will have to return to this book again soon. And there is also no doubt that I will enjoy it even more the next time around and learn perhaps as much as my first time through. This is definitely a five out of five on my review scale!

In a nutshell

To those who are short on time (and money) here are the 309 pages: In each CONCRETE situation/moment determinism DEFINES an ONLY ONE POSSIBLE outcome (human action, thought, emotion, decision including)- the one that did, is going or will realize. But IF the situation would have been DIFFERENT (even SLIGHTLY) deterministic outcome could or should be different also.

Thus when she looks back in time and does NOT (or don't want) notice the difference between actual and imaginable situations she thinks/believes that there had been multiple choices and that it had been her FREE WILL to choose the one that did realize actually; and she rejoices or blames herself.

As circumstances in her (and all mankind) life are full with subtle nuances she (and others) take for granted (or pretend to think) that the nuances do not matter and that she really IS a Free Will "boss" of her life and must take a full responsibility of her actions (which incidentally is important as it WILL have a deterministic effect on future events).

Part II of Darwin's Dangerous Idea

This book is really part two of Dennett's earlier (and magnificant) book, "Darwin's Dangerous Idea." In this excellent followup Dennet seeks to demonstrate two things: (1) Free will is possible in a deterministic envrionment and (2) Free Will can be explained by entirely naturalistic (read non-magical) phenomena.

Very highly recommended.

Dennett is using the analogy that free will is like atmosphere and that how it has evolved to support the life on earth is associated with free will (our free will started journey as infant and is still growing up). He is also comtemplating on determinism using sort of simulation logic. so far so good, but some arguments have been employed over and over from his previous books(like game theory..etc), as if Dennett feels obliged to put forth the same computer generated,IT like matters to convince readers. It would rather be more convincing if he used more philosophical arguments.

This book does a magnificent job of presenting the idea of freedom in a mathematical format that simply cannot be refuted. Are we determined mechanisms in a determined universe? Dennet says yes. But he argues effectively that this does NOT mean that we are fatally doomed to any particular future. He says that we are as free in our will as we could ask to be, and the reason is that so much is determined! Our nature allows so much to take part in our decisions that it ultimately gives us control; any other way, and we'd be simply be response mechanisms. What a brilliant argument he presents in this masterpiece!
