This book is an exhaustive history of the park, from the early concepts to building to operation to closure. Hats off to the author what what has to be years of research and interviews with those behind the park. I worked with some of them, all colorful characters, and it was interesting to learn more about them. There are many rare photos contributed by some of those who worked there, not a recycling of stuff seen in other books or on web sites.
Color me thoroughly impressed. I'm looking forward to going through it again and discovering more details.
"Mommy, daddy, take my hand. Take me out to Freedomland."
Man, the memories.
I was only 9 years old and living in Brooklyn when the park opened. I was so excited that my parents would take me until they got the word from friends who attended the opening week that the park was not worth the money. I never got to go and part of my fascination with Freedomland these past 50 years is researching what I missed out on. To soothe the pain, my parents promised they would take me instead to the New York World's Fair, which they did several times - thank God! I have always envied those who got to experience Freedomland in person.
Those of you who were either fortunate to visit the park or like me never did, this book has it all! It covers Freedomland's developmental stages all the way through to its demise. It is very thorough, includes several wonderful photos and is very well written! As I read each chapter, I could envision actually experiencing each ride or show. Thank you Michael Virgintino for this incredible book which has brought me a great deal of happiness!
The author included a paragraph re. my gang and those other teenagers like us who had little monetary means at the time so we found various ways to sneak into the park. His inclusion made this book an even more personal recollection.
